using fedora core 2 atm, like it...noobish, but with some tweaks it can be somewhat more 'geekish' then out-of-the-box

i'd like to some day be able to install gentoo, but the last time i tried it (2 months ago or so) i wasn't able to understand what they wanted me to do with the stages install and such :P

Not really true. A lot of firms and universities still use RH. Eck, a lot of them are still using rh 7.3 or even older versions.

Here, at the Dept. of Physics at the University of Milan, Italy, we're still using a mix of RH9 and RH8 (only a couple of boxes on more than 30, but still...).

Fedora is not at option atm, mainly because of the incompatibilities w/ some programs/drivers.

Not to mention the clusters, where fedora (w/ 2.6) is way too bleeding edge atm. When you have to run a 16 or 32 boxes cluster 24/7 w/ some important simulations running on it, you have to be damn sure that os doesn't screw things up.

Started with SuSE about 4 years ago, not bad, but I like Debian (unstable) very much.
Now all my machines run Debian unstable with custom kernels 2.6+
(on my AMD64 machine I run the bleeding edge Debian AMD64 port)

Used Suse, Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo on a dual celeron, stuck with Gentoo and it now runs the dual celeron, p4 and am64, all on some sort of 2.6 flavored kernel. It's a bliss upgrading the entire system now using distcc
