Default kernel 2.6, nvidia and the 4kstack option

I have posted my problem here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=29003

But what is interesting is why would the nvidia driver work for my AMD64 box with no problems ( 5332 patched driver for x86_64) and did not work for my dual xeon box (tried both 5336 latest driver and patched 5332 for i386)

the two systems have fresh FC2 installs with the kernel 2.6.5-1.358.

If the problem I have with the driver is 4kstack related, then should it also appear in the amd64 box? or is the x86_64 kernel is compiled without 4kstack option?

Neither Register Parameters (CONFIG_REGPARM) nor 4K stacks (CONFIG_4KSTACKS) are in the x86_64 kernel configs. I do not know if the code effects kernels compiled for that arch or not.. if it does then it is not optional.

and even in my xeon box. There is "CONFIG_REGPARM=y" line. But no CONFIG_4KSTACKS at all in the config file!

config_4stacks is not an option in the fedora kernel, but it is in 2.6.6 proper. The next driver will work with 4k stacks.

Andy,

Got a rough ETA on this new driver. A little more information regarding forthcoming releases from NV might help to cut down on the chatter on these lists a little, leaving you with less to read and more time to code ;-]

This is correct.. but not because the code is not there -- the config option is specifically removed in the Fedora SRPM specfile by applying a patch (linux-2.6.5-nostack.patch). This patch applies the 4K stack option permanently to the source used for building the kernel and for the matching kernel-source RPM. In other words, the xeon (i686) kernel is definitely running 4k stacks. This patch (or very similar patch) is part of some of the -mm series and -ck series kernels as well.

@ Andy Mecham -- thank you kindly for the positive (public) statement.
