Playing Thief 3 on the GeForce 6800 Ultra was incredible. The shadows and lighting effects were very effective and complimented the gameplay. I'll post a few screenshots tomorrow and discuss graphics settings and performance.

hmmm so many negative comments...in the reviews, the screen captures look good though.

From a compatibility POV it's as good as IW i guess. The game has a lot of problems with various combinations. For some strange reason it plays excellent on my XP partition without a single crash so far (thank the builder ). In any case, it's very weak at the start (thanks to that ****ty first level) but when it opens up later on, it gets alot better. What broke my @@ was that ISA did their classic stuff, they just HAD to mess with everything. And i mean everything. Not even the key bindings are the same. Oh well, i'd be very interested to read your opinion about performance on a 6800 Mike

Default Thief 3 Deadly Shadows Screenshots

Here are a few Thief 3 demo screenshots from a GeForce 6800 Ultra that I took while playing the first training level. The Thief 3 "Default.ini" file was left unchanged and all in-game graphics options were set to their maximum level. Bloom was disabled and multisampling was set to 4. AA and AF were set to application preference in the graphics driver.

In order to capture the effects of AA, I had to use the Print Screen key and Alt-Tab back to Windows to save the screenshot (in PNG format). The screenshots were not altered and were converted them from PNG to JPG. The last screenshot was taken with various settings - bloom enabled, then bloom disabled with 1, 2, 3, and 4 multisampling.

The GeForce 6800 Ultra (and Athlon 64 3400+) averaged 45 FPS at 1024x768 in the first tutorial with the same settings that were used in the screenshots. The minimum frame rate of 23 FPS occurred in the scene in screenshot 6. Lighting and shadows are impressive although the screenshots are unable to deliver the effect of the real-time interaction between them. Audio Hardware Mixing and EAX Advanced HD were also enabled.

Damn, I can't wait to start on the next level tonight!

A link to the corresponding 1024x768 screenshot is provide above each thumbnail.

Hmm, a bit lower then I hoped for. I get the same lowest fps (20) with my 9800 XT in 1280x1024x16AF. I hoped a 6800 could run this game at a minimum of 60 fps...

Sweet pics. I just got finished playing the demo myself, and I must say that I love it. I was very skeptical about this game at first and even cancelled my order with EB once the Gamespy review came out; the way they dissed the graphics, I just couldn't see myself enjoying the game. Now I've reordered.

On my 5900XT, I average 20-25 FPS with details maxed at 1024x768. Not horrible numbers, but now I want a 6800!

By the way, excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is "bloom", and why does it have to be disabled when AA is running? Thanks.

My God, this game is a dog! I read the numbers MikeC was getting with a 6800U and I was not impressed at all. FarCry performs better. Does this thing really have THAT great gfx to it??

Bloom is sort of a blur effect. Those familiar with Deus Ex 2 know it well. It basically adds a blurry "dreamy" feel to the images. I can't recall a lot of people liking it though. Personally i prefer the sharper image i get with bloom disabled. Oh, and you loose a couple of fps when you use it btw.

Well, the individual textures are nothing special and don't hold up well in close-up (another XBox concession I assume). However, the overall look of the game is very nice, and the lighting/shadows are impressive. FarCry does not employ shadowing anywhere near the level of Thief 3, which must account for most of the framerate discrepancy.
