could i lower the latency even more then 40, to like 38 and would it run like tighter timings?

must be something about your card or memory chips then, because I have latency at "40" and run all time at 300/500/1000 ! And my card can run even higher than this ! The change from "43" to "40" gives me a reasonable improvement which I wouldn't do without since it is free !!

also, unless the "43" latency value is the sweet spot for your card, any reduction in latency will increase memory performance even although it may also cause a slight reduction in memory overclockability ??

Could i get a better ram overclock if i added some fans to my ramsinks, they get really really hot, they almost burn me to the touch.
Yes you will get better memory performance if you get better control of temperature ! High temperature will always impede both GPU and Memory performance !

For the kind of overclocking performance you are looking for, I would think blowing a good airflow at your memory ramsinks is mandatory ?

Quote:
One last question, is there a bug in the 5x.xx series drivers that they don't switch to 3d mode when the ram is clocked too high. If i set my ram speed over 1000 mhz it will never switch into 3d mode but if I put it to like 995 it works fine.
I generally use the MSI 53.03 driver as I like the MSI extras and I also find the 53.03 driver to be very stable for all my current needs ! However, never experienced or heard of the problem you mention ? My card's memory is set at 1000 stock, and I sometimes run it higher ! So if I had to guess, I would say it was a memory overtemp problem with your card ? It could however just be a built-in safety feature like thermal throttling function ? But still means it is a memory overtemp problem --------> so cool that memory ??? And if you can then run 1000 with no prob's then we will know a bit more about the Nvidia 59xx design ??

I just was wondering if anyone modded the bios to run at 1.6 because it seems like there is instructions for volts up to 1.5, what is preventing it from going to 1.6 in u just modded it that way.
GPU volts in a bios is programmed as a number of options against a stepping of volts ! For a 5900nu, 5900u or 5950u the options allow anything from 1.2v to 1.5v in 0.1 volt steps ! You can't add more options without reprogramming of the bios software ? And reprogramming will only work if the card also supports the software changes ? All we are currently doing with bios modding is fiddling within the scope of existing bios/card programmed capabilities ? And if you like, only slightly bending the rules ?

now you are obviously kicking yourself for not trying the same bios as I use much sooner ???

be very careful when changing latencies ! the 43 value is a small part of many memory timings, which all together are set according to chip rating and performance expected from card !

My card doesn't like the value going below the 40 point, however yours may be different ? slight reductions however are likely only to cause some artifacting, and if so, you can just change them back to a value that works ? To do it properly, it would be necessary to change other timings, but I have no current intentions with playing in that area of a bios !

A XT type card has much more scope for change since its memory timings are based on being very tight, in order to gain max benefit while running memory at much lower speeds ?

Or is everybody using rev 02 just because I do ???

I have been using revision 2 just because i like to keep my stuff up to date. I'll try putting that latency down a bit later maybe.

Well I tryed 39 and when i booted everything was totally messed up like every up and down it would move to the right 5 and go down 5 then move back 5, anyway i flashed back and all is well.

I originally had the same thoughts as you, however if you do a direct compare of the rev 01 and 02 bios's you will only find diffs at following offsets,

For_Rev___01_02

00000034: F0 80 ---> where 80 hides bios boot screen, F0 shows it.

00000056: 91 60 ---> where transposing #57 and #56 gives the
00000057: 92 94 ---> Sub Device ID for bios.

0000FFFF: 56 F5 ---> CRC checksum bit added when bios saved.

So apart from a diff in Sub Device ID's, both bios files are functionally exactly the same ! This is also backed up by the date of 10/06/03 shown at begining of both files !

I have no idea what the diff in ID's actually mean, but flashing with either bios causes my setup to install new drivers, even although both are recognised as 5950u ??

For the record; the rev status of bios files on Mavke site are added by him and therefore nothing to do with actual update status ??

You are only finding what I had already determined; the latency value for at least 5900nu, 5900u and 5950u bios's, should not be reduced below 40 !

Well yesterday i cut a hole in my window and now have a fan blowing on the card at all times, lowered what the card thought was ambient by about 5 degrees and keeps the core about 10 to 15 degrees cooler during load.

I assume you mean a hole in a window of your case as opposed to a window in your house ?

good temp drop though ! Always helps for stable operation under stress !

And now that you have probably tested the hell out of your MSI flashed card, what overclocked speeds are you finally settling for ?
