I _owned_ the ASUS 5800 *non*-ultra and even without the blower on it the annoying high pitched whine of its turbine fan at idle got to me in less than 30 minutes. I sold it on eBay ASAP and luckily got what I paid for it. It sucked, the 5900 non-ultra was a much better card - it ran cooler, ran much, much quieter both at idle and at full go, and is better suited for high res aa/af and dx9. I would rather use a GeForce FX5200 64-bit card than a 5800U/NU just because the annoying whine of the turbine of the 5800 would mean me not wanting to sit at my computer for more than 20 minutes even just using the internet.

And I'll lose 5fps over that annoying idle whine or the WOOOOSH during gameplay any day of the week. Then again, play a DX9 game at high res AA/AF and I don't think you'd want the 5800U over the 5900 that much anymore.

Thanks for the fast reply guys.I ordered the Leadtek version of the 5900XT. Any chance that prices might drop soon so I can get a better 5900 series card for around $200..?

5900 Ultra... I was thinking since the Nv40's are gonna be coming out soon maybe the prices for the lower end cards will drop.

TBH I don't know how much you'd be gaining with a 5900U. Anyplace a 5900XT chokes enough to be choppy the 5900U would probably choke, too. I mean its the same technology with lower clocks and less ram, no pipeline, shader, or any other differences.

I think its more likely the 5900U will be phased out (price doesnt always drop when this happens), and you will have:

MX4000 - $50
FX 5200 - $75 (64-bit)
FX 5200 - $90 (128-bit)
FX 5700 - $130
FX 5700 Ultra - $150
FX 5900XT - $190
6800 - $299
6800GT - $399
6800 Ultra - $499
6800 Ultra Extreme - $549

You CPU is fine for the 5900XT, and would be fine for the 6800 non-ultra (12x1) as well... if you can wait a few weeks and can spend $300, go for that, it will trounce the 5900xt.

My CPU will definantly limit the 6800 preformance... I really should of said that I need this card for a couple of months till I get a new rig with the new NV40's.

EDIT: Btw right now I'm using a Fx5200 and some games just plain rape this card to death even OC'd. I got my Fx5200 300/500 but its just not working out for some games.

It will limit the 6800NU, yeh, but in many DX9 games (read: FarCry, Half Life 2) I think you'd still see a vast improvement with the 6800NU over the 5900XT due to its much faster shader performance. Plus the 6800NU also has got much better AA quality. For $100 more you can get the 6800NU and put it in your machine now, then move it to your new machine when you get it, and use it to hold you over until NV45 is cheap

I would do exactly as you put it ruined, but the problem is.... I just cant wait any longer lol... Im going for a 9800 pro this week, instead of the 6800NU and using that while the price of the 6800 ultra comes down
