Default NVIDIA drivers cause black screen on startx

When I used the nv driver everything works fine but when I try using the nvidia driver I get a black screen when I run startx. My computer doesn't freeze however because I can ssh to it. I installed and reinstalled the nvidia drivers many times according to gentoo's documentation. Attached are my XF86Config and XFree log files.

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "gforce2"
   #Driver "nv"
   Driver "nvidia"
   Option "NvAGP" "1"
   # Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV"
Add the option in red to your config and see how it goes. The setup appears fine otherwise.
Uncomment (remove the #) the green line if you are not using your TV encoder.. if you're not using it, unplug it as well (if its plugged in).

Thanks for the reply. I added that line but I still get the black screen. Any other ideas?

Not yet. What distro are you running, and kernel version? What are the relevant system specs (mobo model / chipset....)?
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0

maybe you have the same problem like many other people with a special version of the amd64 processor?

see threat:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...5&page=3&pp=15

check it:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

when u have a stepping of 10 or 0 the you heve the same issue...

i'm having the same problem

I'm using FC2 with a recompiled 2.6.6 kernel. I followed this guide:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...05&postcount=7

the kernel works very well, also the standard NV driver identifies my Geforce 2 MX 400 well, but somehow, just a blank screen when starting X

here's my cpuinfo (in case it might be needed)
[johndoe@localhost johndoe]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
stepping : 1
cpu MHz : 2088.477
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
bogomips : 4136.96

anymore info needed? according to the guide that was supposed to be 'the solution', i did nothing wrong...or did i?

Kernel 2.6.4-54.5-smp
No AMD, it's an Intel XEON running without ACPI.

Any ideas yet ?

kernel must not have regparam compiled in, and must not have 4k stacks compiled in.
you have to use the patches from minion.de.

and there is a problem with sis-chipsets.
does anybody of you use a sis-chipset?

Johnnydoe and Severus, your problems are most likely different even tho you have similar 'symptoms' (the crash). Please read the sticky post If you have a problem, PLEASE read this first! and then post the information either here or a new thread.

Both of you, try both available AGP drivers, AGPgart and NvAGP. If AGPgart is compiled as a module in your kernel then you can control which of these is active by using the option below in the Device section of your X config:
Option "NvAGP" "n" # where n is 1 for NvAGP and 2 for AGPgart

Severus, try using the non-smp kernel first.

i recompiled the kernel to meet the no-regparam and no-4k stacks requirements.
i also tried the two different AGP drivers but neether would work.

After that, i tried the patch from minion.de, which in turn gave me the error that the installer couldn't find the kernel module name, which i don't have when running the installer without the patch.

anybody has another suggestion?
thanks
