Hello!
I have SAME PROBLEM with my sis 745 chipset(whitch is supported!!!!)! I figured out that nvagp is the problem. Agp driver from linux kernel - agpgart works fine but i would like to try nvidia's one. Nvagp works only with 2x agp rate on my box, if i switch it to 4x i got black screen after startx, and have to do hard reset(alt+ctrl+f1 doesn't work). There is NOTHING about errors in log - thats how it ends:
...
[22] -1 0 0x00005080 - 0x0000509f (0x20) IX[b]
[23] 0 0 0x000003b0 - 0x000003bb (0xc) IS[b](OprU)
[24] 0 0 0x000003c0 - 0x000003df (0x20) IS[b](OprU)
(II) NVIDIA(0): AGP 4X successfully initialized
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768"

Im using gentoo linux. Any ideas how to force nvagp to work wiht 4x rate???

there is the switch "options nvidia NVreg_ReqAGPRate = 4" which can be used in /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modules.conf.local or /etc/modprobe.conf.local, but i don't think it will save you from crash, coz your log sais, that it successfully figured out, that it can use agp4x.
and this switch does nothing other, than to force the driver to use agp4x.

Your recompiled kernel source directory must be linked as /usr/src/linux (i.e. ln -sf /usr/src/linux-<version> /usr/src/linux). You must also have the kernel source directory still configured, so if you did a make clean or make mrproper you might need to replace the .config and do make prepare. This should get it going.

A bit more reason: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...00&postcount=3

similar problem here.
using RH9, 2.4.20-8, geForce FX 5200
can't seem to get x to run without going to a black screen. When i kill x with ctrl+alt+bksp, then get back to my text terminal, there is the error:
=> Failed to initalized GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)
along with this line twice:
=> Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved
i can't post XF86Config files, but i did take out 'load "dri"' under modules, and added 'load "GLX"', and under devices set 'Driver "nvidia"'.
I'm new at linux, and i've spent about 5 days researching, and trying to find something that can help me, and i haven't, so if i could get any help at all, i'd be extremely grateful. I'd just like to see the GUI once, just once since i installed linux on my box.

thanks for the suggestions LordMorgul, but it didn't help, still getting the "Can't find kernel module name" error.

I have an Asus A7N8X-X, and I believe it doesn't have a SIS chipset

anymore suggestions?
