Question nvidia driver installation fails on openSUSE 10.3

I've compiled nvidia drivers 100 times in the previous versions of Suse without a problem And now... it looks like it compiles and then just at the end it says the driver module installation failed.

What can you guess from this log? I'm absolutely clueless.

I have openSUSE 10.3, AMD64, all gcc, make, sources etc. installed.

When I install from the nvidia Installation Source, it installs fine but resolution is cr*p. I have a 19" widescreen with 1400x900. Without the driver the desktop is sharp, fast and right aspect ratio. With that driver installed, it's blurry and stretched. The nvidia xconfig utility doesn't even have a 1400x900 option.

Thanks in advance.

1.0-8776 is no longer supported. Please use 100.14.19, and see the forum sticky posts for further assistance.

But it's the only one which always worked perfectly with my video card Asus GeForce 6600GT. None of the new drivers worked regardless whether they were installed from the Source or compiled. My question is not why the driver from Sources doesn't work well, but rather why the compiled one doesn't install? It used to install without a problem in any previous version. Does the log file tell you anything? Or you also need the bug report?

1.0-8776 is not expected to work with any recent kernels. Please use 100.14.19, and see the forum sticky posts for further assistance.

Not true, my friend has just installed it in openSUSE 10.3 and it's working.

Well, I told you it doesn't work, that is it at least got installed but resolution is sh*t. there's no 1440x900. The best resolution it has is 1280x1024. This is nonsense. I had a perfect 1440x900 resolution without the nvidia driver.

Here's the bug report and log file attached.

Please comment out the "1440x900" modelines in xorg.conf, and if the problem persists, start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate a new bug report.

well, there's nothing to comment out cos the only resolution listed in xorg is 1440x900 but the nvidia uses 1280x1024.

Here's a simple test I've done:

I've uninstalled the driver, reinstalled everything related to X11, basically started from scratch.

1. I've downloaded 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.19-pkg2.run'
2. I've compiled the driver, chose all the default options (I tried all possible option before), did not choose to update the xorg.conf, didn't run 'sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia' after compilation
3. after init 5 I was brought into a sharp right resolution 1440x900 screen, everything seems perfect
4. checked in Sax2 in YAST, no 3D support enabled, this means my desktop is showing great without the nvidia driver loaded
5. now I go into /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change 'Driver "nv"' for 'Driver "nvidia"', save it, press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and...
6. and my screen looks like sh*t!
7. ok, I go back into xorg.conf, change 'nvidia' back to 'nv', Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and...
8. and my screen looks great again

Now, tell me if it's not the nvidia driver...

Please see the xorg and nvidia bugreport from -verbose 6 attached. Do they tell you anything? Do I need to change anything in BIOS for the new driver to work? Thanks.

Please add the following option to the Device section of xorg.conf:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"

It worked! It worked!!! IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I put

Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"

into xorg.conf, it started working!!!

Thanks a million, mate! I don't know what I'd do without your help.

If you remember, when I built another computer a few months ago and wanted to connect it to a plasma TV (it had a 8500GT chip) and had no luck at all with the nvidia drivers because of screwed up resolution, then I tried to install them with my Acer monitor I'm struggling with now, and also had no luck... I concluded the new drivers were stuffed. So, maybe I could have fixed my HDTV resolution problem the same way? If I only knew how at that time... Anyway, I'll try it again shortly.

I have a Nvidia 7300GT PCI-Express graphics card. I have installed OpenSuSE 10.3 running.

I have installed the Nvidia driver as per the single click instructions available at the link

http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA#openSUSE_10.3

The driver was installed successfully but soon after reboot the runlevel 5 gets skipped.

I tried started the Sax2 using the command

$> sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
But this failed.

Later on as per the instructions in this thread I modified the xorg conf file and added the below line to the device section

' Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck" '

and tried starting the sax2 but this also failed

I have attached the xorg.o.log file and the sax.log files.

Looking forward for earliest reply.

thank you.
