Default fx 6800 support?

Hi,

When will the Linux driver support the fx6800? I am planning to buy the card as soon as it comes out and need to use the Linux OS.

Thanks.

if i'm not mistaken, the 6800 will continue with nvidia's convention and use the unified drivers; if that's the case, then yes, it will support the 6800.

But the current Linux driver does not list support for 6800. The drivers are unified but I doubt the current ones will work with the 6800 without some modifications. Am I right in thinking this?

In which case does anyone know a date for 6800 support? As I have a deadline coming up and would like to use the NV40!

i really don't know, the only thing i can go by are assumptions. since nvidia has supported linux so well thus far, i am sure they will support linux; but i don't know when.

a google search came up with nothing =\

Atleast the opensource xfree86 nv driver from xfree86 cvs supports the nv40. There's a chance too that even the 53xx driver contains some experimental code as it came out near the time the nv40 code went in xfree86 cvs.

I'm sure the next driver will have nv40 but there again it has a hole new architeture so maybe it may take a while. The Windows nv40 drivers are not final so I would'nt worry about it yet and even they dont have offical support.

Driver work is ongoing according to our beloved friend Andy Mecham -- if the driver team is still working on support for anything linux at all you can bet they want the best card they have.. to work.

I hope they have the new driver out in a couple weeks. That is when my preorder BFG 6800 OC is supposed to arrive.

This will be the first card I am buying right away when released. I usually buy the previous chipsets super star. Right now my system has a ti4600. If I kept to this routine, I would be buying an FX 5950. I have a little extra money this year and am treating myself.

We have a guinea pig HERE
Geforce 6800 is no go.
I think that suLinux is right, nvidia does not yet have a official windows driver for NV40. We are further down on the food chain. At a complete guess july 1st at earliest, if not mid july.

They do have Windows drivers, but like you said I don't think they're official. They came with the card on a CD and aren't WHQL-certified, or whatever that Windows driver signing is called. But they work! I've been able to play UT2004 at 1920x1440 @ 100fps, and 1600x1200 @ 70fps w/ 4x AA & 4x AF, or was it 8 and 8? I don't remember the exact numbers, but it's damn fast.
