Laptop and config file settings for external Monitor

Hello,
I would like to use Fn-F8 to switch from laptop lcd to my 21" monitor and back or some similar method to change screens WITHOUT having to restart X

Currently I use xorg but i have 2 config files, one for my lcd and one for the 21 monitor... so when i need to change i need to init 3 then init 5 ... this is unsustainable !! ;-)

Anyone at all able to help me in a config that will allow me to run my laptop with the lcd and monitor interchangably ??

This is a development machine but i need to go to meetings and presentations during the day so all this restarting X is killing me...

here are some specifics:

Machine : Dell 5150 (3.2 Hyperthread) 1Gb Ram
Os : Fedora Core 2 SMP (8k Stacks) + Nvidia driver working
Lcd : Optimal 1600x1200@60Hz
Monitor : 1600x1200@85Hz (Dell 1130P)

I am going to be writing up how I set up this laptop on linux laptops soon and this is the last piece of the puzzle.. I even have wlan etc working nicely now..
