Thats koo, I'd much rather use the onboard codec, less cpu usage plus it already comes w/ coax/optical SPDIF connectors for my z680's. It prolly won't be that bad.

nah its not bad once you get used to it...

I think the main issue with me was loss of EAX effects that I was used to... i doubt sound-storm supports that anyways..

the overall performance is kewl and if you are like me you will LOVE running your system with cool 'n' quiet

makes me feel I am doing my part in keeping greenhouse emmisions low lol...

-edit-

oh and btw...

UPDATE YOUR SIG

blah, you tree-hugger you!

Think soundstorm supported some form of environmental audio effects but don't remember if it was EAX or another. btw, sig updated

welp, after wasting several hrs reinstalling drv's/winxp, seems the Realtek codec doesn't output digital audio directly to speakers that suport it and overall the dac just sucks compared to my old soundstorm. Having confirmed this w/ a few other sites, guess I'll be picking up an audigy tomorrow. Gotta have my digital optical/coax digital audio goodness

That sucks man, sorry to hear that. I really don't understand why NV dropped the SoundStorm it seem like a great idea.

Well as I'm anti-CL, may I just make one suggestion? Get a Hercules Fortissmo III instead

Well I've just spent the last couple hrs doing research over with the audiophiles at 3DSS and it has really enlightened my general understanding of digital audio vs analog & specifically Dolby Digital encoding.

I don't get it. You're saying that by letting the Z680 control pod decode the DD signal, it will sound worse than letting Audigy2 do it?

-------------------------------------------------------

Yes. DD uses very tight compression alhorithms at the expense of some level of sound quality. Naturally when the DD stream is decoded back to analog this level of sound quality is still lost. That is why DD encoding is a double-edged sword. While it enables multichannel audio through SPDIF (Soundstorm), which is a good thing for people with a receiver that lacks corresponding analog inputs, it degrades sound quality. Therefore one should always use analog connection if possible.
Several posts also say with an audigy 2 + z680 setup, analog outputs will produce better sound for music & 5.1 for gaming and only use digital for DTS/AC3 encoded dvd's.

Tonight we'll find out what my ears think.
