m4rgin4l and SuLinUX,
yes crappy interface. X is inherently crap, and all the window managers available are even worse. KDE is buggy, GNOME has no real functionality or features (like their crappy file dialogs, etc etc). both of the above window managers are crap in nearly everything.. no consistent user interface is the largest problem: 1) drag-drop 2) copy/cut/paste 3) window decorations and behaviour 4) graphical consistency - Human Computer Interaction design principles. Trust me, there is a reason why all linux (etc *nix) gui stuff are crap... its because they are designed by us programmers, to suit our own needs. and we are crap at any real and effective design. M$ has a whole department on usability and HCI issues.. open source software are governed by the developers who make the choices, so even if you wanted to get involved in the design and improvement, we wouldn't let you ![]() Ever tried to get KDE and GNOME people to agree on the same theme interface and implementation? ha... more likely to get a Jew to marry a Natzi during WWII, since we've already tried... so next time you wonder why your applications can look different from each other, its all because of the different toolkits... we have 5-6 or them... anyway.. enough ranting about crappiness in *nix systems.. they are for my servers, not my desktop (although i use Fedora Core 2 for my desktop.. am i anal or what?). |

sehh
It's off topic but go see my kde desktop HERE , usability it's ahead of Windows in many ways. If you want to throw your FUD about the Linux desktop then I will answer it with facts not inexperienced views like yours.

SuLinUX,
indeed this is off-topic. still though, i pointed out many problems with the current GUIs in linux (X and window managers) you only pointed out a screenshot to show that you have a nice looking desktop my friend you dont impress me, i run gdesklets/karamba as well, no big deal there, you can't impress me with crap like that. i am talking about real HCI issues here, not how to make fancy transparent crap for kiddies. you just prove my reasoning, since coders do the coding and the design, you end up with gdesklets, karamba, gkrellm and other fancy stuff, but no real usable desktop implementation ontop of a suitable technology (X is crap as already mentioned). *edit* i'll post my desktop in there as well, just for the hell of it :] |

Well even if X/KDE/Gnome etc suck. I paid for my GeforceFX 5200 card and I expect Nvidia to keep the driver up to date. Because I *paid* for it.

It doesn't matter how much you paid, you don't exist for NVIDIA. This is the case of the majority of hardware manufacturers. Linux desktop users are an illusion created by a satanic sect of geeks who want to take over the world...
It took over a year and a half to get support for my Canon USB Scanner on SANE and it didn't came from Canon (For them LINUX is a four letter word). Anyway, there's nothing we can do but sit on our asses and wait. |

Up until recently, I was using an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO, you guys have _no idea_ how lucky you are with regards to driver support. The quality of nvidia's releases are just way better, and can't even be compared. ATI's driver's are really really really bad, and if you can actually get them working, the performance is 10x worse than in Windows. My 5900XT which is actually a lot slower than the 9800PRO beats the hell out of it under Linux. And that's with TV-OUT enabled!!

I have to agree with arokh. No matter how angry I am at NVIDIA, the installer is an excellent product. I used it in a lot of distros with almost no problems at all. In fact, the only problems I had was the distro's fault.
Besides that, I'm still angry at NVIDIA, and I still love Linux. ![]() |
