Default Linux Drivers. HELP!

Hi! I'm new to linux, and am running mandrake 10.0 on a partition. I got out of Xserver and started the instalation. I accept the user end license and get this :

No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernal would you like the installler to attempt to download the kernel interface fot your kernal from the Nvidia ftp site?

I press yes and I get this:

No matching kernel interface was found on the Nvidia ftp site. This means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for your kernel.

I press ok. This is displayed:

gcc-version-check failed:
Coulodn't compile gcc-version-check.c
If you know what you are doing and want to ignore the gcc version check, select "No" to continue. Otherwise, select "Yes" to abort the install, set the cc enviroment variable to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel, and restart install. Abort now?

The first time I tried this, I pressed No. It didn't work. The second time I tried, while I copied this down, I pressed Yes. It displayed a screen that said this:

Install has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.lg for details. You may find suggestions in the readme avaliable on the linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

Well, I check the driver download page and it said some stuff about the kernel that I didn't understand. Can you help me? Thanks!

You want the source of your running kernel installed, and in the right place too.

theco, get your mandrake install cds and try this in a terminal:

urpmi kernel-source

This should install your kernel sources in the right place. If you get in trouble with this command, you can check http://www.urpmi.org to get more information on how to configure your urpm source liste for install (most document are in french but some are in english)

Once you have installed the kernel-source package, launch the nvidia install process again.

Good luck

Maybe you miss glibc. I had the same problem and after googling a lot I found out that this error "Couldn't compile gcc-version-check.c" is due to the lack of glibc.
