Default My X800 XT PE

Well, the Sapphire board came today. I had just enough time to hook it up on my lunch hour and snap some photos. See the attached if interested.

Wish I had better news. As usual, I can't just hook something up and have it work. After starting 3dmark03 it crashed to the desktop before making it through the Proxycon sequence. Not very encouraging. I don't have time to troubleshoot it right now since I'm on my lunch and have to leave momentarily. I am using the Beta 4.5 drivers.

Not sure WTF is wrong with it but I have a couple ideas. For one, I accidentally installed the ATI WDM (whatever that is) when I first tried loading the beta driver. I didn't go into the Driver folder and run setup from there first (Doh!). So I rebooted after removing that, went into safe mode, ran driver cleaner, and then installed the driver and control panel properly. So that *should* be OK, but who knows now... Secondly, the extra power connector is pretty crappy that it came with and I'm not entirely sure it is all the way inserted. However, I don't want to force anything either so I'm not sure what to do next.

Any ideas?

Take your time and be careful!

Well I would make sure to do an full uninstall of your older drivers with the ATI uninstall utilities first and then reinstall the beta drivers. Also make sure you get the ATI patch for 3DMark03 - I believe Guru3D has it if you don't already. I have read a few threads on Rage3D where this is crashing on X800 users that haven't downloaded the patch. Also, if you have ATItool installed by chance, you might want to shut it down before running the benchmark.

I dunno, in the past when something runs 100% fine and then just totally 100% fails for no particular reason in multiple applications, in my experience its been a board problem. My uncle got a dud 5900NU that had a missing capacitor and ran Windows & Nvidia demos fine but crashed hard after running 3dmark03 and the farb-rausch demos for about 60secs.

Try looping this demo for some time:
http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=/...l.zip&fileinfo

If that fairly simple demo crashes along with 3dmark, odds are you have a bum card.

Well he slapped it in real fast and bailed out - I am hoping the suggestions I made will fix it.

I was pretty careful putting it in, at least relative to most people I know who think nothing of even grounding themselves. Nothing obvious went wrong as far as a part snapping off or anything like that.

I suppose I can always try removing/reinstalling the beta driver and ofcourse installing that patch. I'll go looking tonight if I get some time.

No ATI Tool installed here... Just the driver/cpl.

I've seen 3dmark crash to the desktop before w/no error messages. At the time it was due to bad memory on my machine. That isn't the case now, however. The card does make it through "Wings of Fury" test and part of proxycon, but then it dies after that.

What about trying the release 4.5 driver? Does it support the XT?

ATI Tool should have no bearing on any of that stuff. I had it running with my X800 Pro and it caused no problems in any game or benchmark I tried.

Keep trying those troubleshooting options, but it's very possible you got yourself a bum card. And with them being in such short supply, it might be tough to get it exhchanged.

PS - Anyone notice that AllStarShop has jacked the price of that card to up near $700 now?

Honestly I think you are best off trying different 3d applications before you try different drivers, i.e. homebrew ones like the one I posted above, DirectX8, etc... It's possible but its pretty hard to screw up a driver install so bad that the card just randomly dies in the middle of an app that started fine. Loop other demos/apps such as the above one and see if they also crash.

Well Catalyst Maker from ATI reported that the 4.6 drivers are going to be released today. Get those or get the official 4.5 drivers if they aren't out yet. Both driver sets should support the XT.

Also make sure you have the ATI patch for 3DMark03 that can be found on Guru3D.com installed.

Everyone has good advice here. Start with the latest official Catalyst drivers from ATI and go from there.

ATI.com still lists the 4.5 drivers. It's 3 p.m. in ATI-land, perhaps these drivers won't be out until tomorrow.
