I put the Service Pack on WinXP, no probs for me. In fact, I'ver never really had a problem with any MS OS.

i've had all the xp service packs, the betas and final. on 3 different computers. no problems at all, and installing the final over the beta versions.

I use solaris build 72 with some kernel variations for work. The current compilation of solaris i have has lots of the nifty features of Linux but it allows me to hook up directly to the campus's sun mainframe.
Mainframe has 5 1.2 ghz parralel processors, 8 gigs of a sun native ram and the hard drive is close to one 1.5 terabyte.
The size of the mainframe takes up one whole class room.
Great for running OS simulations.

Only time i use 2000 is for MS word and for games.

Run Windows 2000 pro SP3.

I prefer Win2K over WinXP. My expernice with WinXP has been a horrible one. I found it to be far more unstable than Win2K also I could never find the "right look" for WinXP. Even the classic skin looked horrible as well.

I plan to install Red Hat 8.0 on both my Laptop and Desktop very soon .

I'm on XP Pro... I tried Linux, i really wanted to try linux anyway, but it wasn't installing right... system halted on the sound init or something like that... (Mandrake) and i'm not versed in Linux enough to fix it. besides, i hate that damn Linux partitioning!

Hmm...

I have a few machines here:

1 PC - Windows XP/Linux Mandrake 8
1 iBook - OSX (Jaguar)
1 PowerMac 9500 - MacOS 9.2.2 (not upgraded enough for Jaguar, yet )

I suppose I could assemble another couple of computers from the parts laying around my house, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

Default stability makes the computer...

I run Win2K w/newest SP on my work machine (HP Vectra VL PII/233/128mbRAM/4mbvideo/nice 17" M70 monitor)... it's set up very efficiently and is actually fast!! It's very very stable, even with all the Access databases and ERP inventory software and outlook and word etc etc open all at once!! I enjoy it almost more than my home win98 system, which I'm about to up to XP... It's nice getting "enough" juice out of a 233 though... that seems to be where win2K shines, in older systems. Our company has about 20 computers using this os, and all are Pentium 200's, PII 233's, PII 450's, and PIII 500's. All are slot 1, so maybe Q1 2004 we'll have to get a buttload of evergreen performa 600-1ghz slotket upgrades to keep up with the times...

Windows XP Pro SP1 here.

As far as why not install the SP if you're having no problems, I can give a reason- I installed it on my other computers (I have 3, mine, my spouse's, and my daughter's). Recently my wife bought some educational multimedia software for my daughter (it's about dinosaurs, which my 6 month old is majorly into right now). The software appeared to install fine, but every time I tried to run it, I got a message about an error with a codec, please reinstall the program.. After attempting the reinstall with no success, I checked the developer's web site, found a known issue on this w/XP SP1 (and NOT pre-SP1 XP), along with the statement that they're working hard to find a solution..

So, if you're having no problems, I wouldn't recommend installing the whole Service Pack. Just install the other security fixes and updates as needed. (I'm going to probably have to reformat and reinstall XP on my daughter's computer soon if the company in question doesn't get a work-around or patch out asap)
