Angry Can't STOP X

Put an eGeForce2 MX 400 in a PIII running Fedora Core 2. Installed the newest nvidia driver. Everything worked great until:

I can't shut down!

More specifically, I can't stop X.

Anything that tries to stop X, such as a <ctrl><alt><f2> to get another screen; or even a "shutdown" from a command line results in a blue frozen screen.

Ideas?
