Default HDTV With Nvidia Cards Under Linux

Good evening all. I am wondering if it's possible to view 1920x1080i video on an HDTV using the DVI port. Many people in the Linux community are having difficulties achieving this resolution, and rather are using 960x540. Is this an Nvidia graphics card problem or something else? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
