The day after forever at this rate;

Seems like hobsons choice for GPUs at the mo; you've either got ATI who have 'driver diahorrea' at the moment, but their drivers are a pain. Or Nvidia who have been silent for ages and are now pretty quiet about the 4K Stacks issue.

At least you can still compile a 2.6.6 kernel to go with your NV driver.

any kernel upto 2.6.7 will work with nvidia's driver as long as 4k stacks is disabled, for FC2 i recommend downloading the 2.6.6 tarball from www.kernel.org and compiling it.

No, any kernel except 2.6.5 kernels will compile without 4K Stacks.

Some 2.6.5s had it hardcoded although it can be patched.

I currently have Fedora core 2 running with the NVIDIA 5336 driver using
a compiled from source version 2.6.6-rc2-bk3 with 4-K stacks turned off

However, the next stable kernel 2.6.7 was released this morning.

I have built it and can run the system with the "NV" driver.

However, attempts to build the NVIDIA 5336 driver result in compilation errors due to something in the header files .

Shouldn't take long - according to Softimage, they are expecting to finish certification of 61xx for Linux anytime soon (for Softimage|XSI 4).

There's some info is on their website (XSI 4 -> certified graphic cards -> Linux) - nothing about the drivers, just that they are now certifying 61xx, to be released soon...

Why do you recommend the 2.6.6 kernel, when 2.6.7 is available? Is it just that we don't know yet about 2.6.7's quality?
