Default Re: Kernel 2.6.7 is out

I just wanted to add here that, on my home machine which uses a CRT and NOT a flatpanel and uses svga and NOT dvi, the new kernel 2.6.7 and the nvidia driver 5336 are working fine together. Of course, I am using 8K stacks and build my own kernel.

So, I believe problems are isolated to FlatPanels and dvi ports. If nvidia can get 4k stacks working, fine. But, FlatPanel monitors using dvi ports should also be fixed.

the other detail: the flatpanel, dvi port, work machine is also a pci card and is not working correctly with the nvidia card/driver under 2.6.7.

the crt, svga, home machine is an agp card and working fine with all kernels

The kernels works great for me, but I have a question: what are 4k and 8k stacks!?

4K stacks are an option added in 2.6.6 of the kernel. Prior to that, the only option was 8k stacks.

When you say it is working fine for you, what is your hardware?

pci or agp

version of kernel

flat panel or crt

dvi or svga

just a "works fine here" means nothing to diagnosis the problem.

I too am having problems. I have an older gf3 ti200 card... UT2004 used to work fine with the 5336 driver and the latest patch. An upgrade to 2.6.7 broke everything. I can run X fine (X.org) but some video modes just don't work. At first I thought it was just UT2004, but then I realized it wasn't. The "busyspheres" RSS (really slick screensavers) from xscreensaver crashes every time, even on a small, mini demo previewing.

I could try going back to 2.6.6, but that had a local DOS exploit ... I'd rather see a new Nvidia driver. My card is 4x AGP, with an Athlon XP 2400+, and ECS K75SA mb (mostly SiS chipset). Using standard VGA (not dvi).

Cool Re: Kernel 2.6.7 is out

You still haven't told me what the stacks are ...

But my hardware is:
gf3ti500
P4a
plenty of ram
slackware 10rc1 (so that means Xorg not xfree86)
kernel 2.6.7

I run kde, but that shouldn't matter.

the ut2004 demo and glxgears work fine.

edit: oh yeah, AGP. And it's a dell, so I don't really know what mobo i have. CRT.

I have the same trouble. My card wont work on 2.6.7 at all, on 2.6.6 its fine.
As for the DOS issue just apply the patch from 2.6.6, it only takes one line of code to fix it !!

Yea, good call... here's the diff:

http://linuxreviews.org/news/2004-06...ndex.html#toc8

I'm going to try that and see how it works. I copied the file to the /usr/src/linux-2.6.6 directory and issued a "patch -p1 < i387.diff" ... of course, that's what I named it when I downloaded it. I'll have to recompile 2.6.6 and see how that goes.

For atmchicago et al., quoting from the kernel configuration help files

CONFIG_4KSTACKS:

If you say Y here the kernel will use a 4Kb stacksize for the
kernel stack attached to each process/thread. This facilitates
running more threads on a system and also reduces the pressure
on the VM subsystem for higher order allocations. This option
will also use IRQ stacks to compensate for the reduced stackspace.

Also, since your system is an agp + crt , it is just like my home system which works fine.

The only trouble I am having with kernel 2.6.7 + nvidia 5336 is with flat panel + dvi + pci

So, it is not the same problem.

Hmmm, ok. My system works fine now. Even in 2.6.7 ... I had slackware-current, that is, from may 25th. I upgraded to the most recent version (10rc1) and it works fantastic. Looks like there might have been a problem with my version of libc or something. All I did was update to slackware 10rc1, and it worked fine in the patched 2.6.6. Then I went ahead and tried 2.6.7, recompiling the nvidia kernel driver. Even the "busyspheres" screensaver works fine now (it used to lock up the whole system hard.) This was definitely a software conflict, like I said, either libc or perhaps gcc or something.

So for a more recent machine, which is better: 4k or 8k stacks?
