In my opinion, yes. MSI makes awesome 5900XT, so does Gainward, Albatron, Gigabyte, etc

From what I've seen, the 9800np should perform like a 9700pro. You have the usual nV dominating OGL and ATI doing well in D3D, but I think the 5900XT has a small edge over your card. Both are fine cards and you'll only notice any difference when you're pushing toward non-playable framerates, so I think you're fine if you play with settings like most people.

Why don't you like ati products? You do know you will not get much if any of a performance increase by getting a 5900XT?

If you do decide to get a 5900XT then the one which has been voted the best (in the link below) is the MSI 5900XT VTD128 which also comes with VIVO!

5900XT vs. 9700 Pro... should give you a decent indication of the performance similarity.

Definitely 98P. I have both & i know the difference. You can also mod a 98NP @ 98P just with a bios flash.

Same here - switched back from ATI to Nvidia and here's why

I play Lineage 2 and City of Heroes - I got one of the first X800pro's ATI shipped out by Best Buy at end of April

It replaced a 5950ultra (which replaced a 9700pro etc so I have no loyatly to either company just whichever is best for me at the time )

Back the story - so X800pro goes in - usual wipe fresh drivers etc -
next to the 5950ultra - the X800 ran COH and L2 like ****

weird color textures - the loading of heavily dense areas in mmorpg's for some reason always load slower on ATI products than Nvidia

So I sold my X800 on Ebay for 5.00 more than paid for it and got a BFG 5900XT with only 128 mb ram to hold me over until can get a 6800

Was worried as I use the VP201s LCD monitor with 1600x1200 etc and wondered if would be gimped with 128mb ram etc

the 5900xt shows the City of Heroes colors like they are supposed to be (ATI has some weird issue with colors at night in the game)- Lineage2 runs much much better -

So why Nvidia over ATI ? In my case because City of Heroes is what am playing the most and a "lesser" Nvidia card (5900xt) put the more expensive X800 pro to shame - and with Everquest2 coming out I know there will be way less issues with Nvidia and will run better on the 6800 ( the Devs have even stated it will have enhancements to take advantage of the 6800 )

Not anti-ATI by any means but if you go on their rage3d forums they swear every game can be run better on an ATI Radeon whatever version and its just not true - some are some arent

Original poster I am right there with you and can tell you the 5900xt is great for its price and you wont regret it

I'd save up an extra $100 and get a 6800 non-ultra, it will smoke both the 5900XT and 9800:
http://www.evga.com/products/moreinf...128-A8-N343-AX

5900XT is great for most games, but it might be slow in future complex DX9 games if they do not support partial precision... Haven't heard of any like this to date, though.

6800 is your best bet if you can afford $299.

I feel the same way. Also a big MMORPG gamer and NVIDIA has always been better with 95% of them in my experience with the exception of Earth and Beyond, my old 9500 pro smoked in that game and my ti 4400 stunk in comparison. My best friend ditched his ATI card when he saw my performance in SWG with my 5900NU. Some games just like NVIDIA, it just isn't as well known to people who read review sites because they tend to only bench FPS games. Last thing a MMO player wants is video lag and a game crash in a mmo is BAD BAD BAD. NOthing worse than being on a big raid in everquest and your video card keeps crashing your game, eventually you get left behind and many zones in MMO type games are raid only meaning the only way you are coming home is to die.

Ditto here, but I don't play MMOs - rather older adventure games and flight sims.

It's too bad MOST review sites just review shader-intensive D3D shooters. That's what ATI does well in - and that's about ALL ATI does well in. Try OpenGL? ATI chokes. Try playing older (DX7 and earlier games)? ATI chokes, and forget about anti-aliasing working at all! Flight sims? Well, ATI's anisotropic opimizations (disabling everything but bilinear on all texture passes but the first) become REALLY apparent. And their FPS chokes.

ATI does one thing - and they do it very, VERY well, you have to give them that. If all you play is shooters, you SHOULD have an ATI card.

*But*....for the REST of us....

(FWIW, I've traded through a Radeon 9500 Pro, 9600 Pro, 9800 non-Pro, 9800 Pro, and 9800 XT. Of all these cards, I've found my GeForceFX 5900XT to simply offer the best performance and image quality in the games *I* play.)

the R9800NP will perform better in AA/AF, but otherwise the FX5900XT is right on par with it in raw performance. However I do think you would be better off buying a Geforce 6800NU instead because it'll blow them both out of the water overall. But if you wanna buy now and not spend much, I can tell you first hand you won't be disappointed with the FX5900XT and they start at only $175 at Newegg.com

I actually got rid of my R9800Pro and got this FX5900XT because I had a lot of technical issues with the Radeon and I got tired of fighting with it. It wasn't the first Radeon card to give me problems either, stuff like crashing and image studdering. So I understand your desire to go with Nvidia over ATI. ATI makes a wonderful product, but Nvidia seems to work better for some of us. (me shrugs)

Ya I hate to say it, But in MMORPG experiences Nvidia seems to be doing better than ATI.

I have been playing City of heroes, and it runs pretty well on my system with 4x AA/8x Quality AF, Same with EQ 2. And if EQ 1 is any indication of how EQ 2 may treat ATI Gpus.. It doesnt sound pretty..

Generally speaking though, I dont think you'll be over all satisfied making a switch. But if you got too. It should be pretty comparable expect in shader 2.0 limited titles such as Far Cry, But games like City of Heroes and EQ2 which will make heavy use of bump mapping. I bet the Nvidia GPU has an edge.
