Default Re: nvidia driver makes x flicker at random times

Well, I still have the problem on an Acer Aspire 1511LMi (nVidia GeForce FX 5700Go), kernel 2.6.6, Debian.
It see the issue only in 1024x768 mode (refresh 60Hz), but in Window$ I don't notice it (same mode & refresh rate), so it's not a card problem. 800x600 works flawlessly, and also 1024x768 when using GLX fullscreen (quake 3) there are no troubles.
Tried to:
-change HW/SW cursor control with both "0"/"1" and "off/on"
-use a kernel compiled with AGPGART option enabled or disabled
None worked.
Is there any nVidia guy able to say if it's a known bug or if I should continue in trying other tricks to fix it?

Hate to me a me too-er, but I also am having the same issue. Also a Dell D800. I get it occasionally and I'm running at 1680x1050. I'm just hoping its not going to damage the display or adapter.
Thanks to anyone who is able to help.

I had the same problem but it seems that it is away. I tried different things. I am not sure which of the trying was the effect to stop the crazy flickering. But i think i can reduce it to the following.

I use a P20 Toshiba Laptop (with HT) with 1440 x 900 Resolution. My Modeline (1440 x 900) starts with a Pixelclock under 100 (99.9) otherwise XFree gives a warning that it is out of sync and the result (under Mandrake 10) was in not starting the native Resolution. A Pixelclock over 100 works with Suse 9.1 but i think you need to ignore the edid-information if you use Mandrake 10.
At the end of the Modeline do i have a +hsync + vsync.
But i think the reason is the smp-kernel. I changed from the smp-kernel to the default-Kernel in Mandrake 10 and Suse 9.1 and the flicker went away.

P.S. An other thing, it is a little bit OT. Here are many users in that thread who have a 17" Toshiba Notebook. Have you the problem that you have the disconnect the notebook from power for 5 seconds to start the notebook after a shutdown under Linux? Does someone know how to control the fan?

Unhappy Re: nvidia driver makes x flicker at random times

sorry frage_nvidia, but I'm not running SMP-kernel (in fact, I have a single CPU).
I try now to post my config files, hoping that someone will catch the point.

Changing to a non SMP Kernel didn't fix the flicker problem for me. It got much better, but it's not gone.

Hi

I have found out that one need some options too, to get the flickering away.
Here is the Device-Section of my XF86Config - File. One need both options, NvAGP and HWCursor.
(I use the default kernel instead of the smp-kernel)

Section "Device"
BoardName "0x0348"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "nvidia"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "NVidia"
Option "NoLogo" "true"
Option "NvAGP" "2"
Option "HWCursor" "false"
EndSection

frage_nvidia: sorry... not working for me. Maybe I could try to disable the int10 (solution for another problem... but now I've tried almost everything!)

Hope that continually updating this thread will cause some kind of answer from nVidia guys, sooner or later (curses or insults included - just for knowing they're considering us)...

If you haven't already, please send a detailed bug report (with the nvidia-bug-report.sh log file) to linux-bugs@nvidia.com; this will help isolate the problem (at this point it sounds like a GeForce FX 5xxx Go problem).

My TFT display sometimes goes completely black and immediately turns on again when I move the mouse. Is this what you guys are talking about? On a CRT i assume this would show up as a flicker if it's turned on and off quickly. My hypothesis is that xscreensaver is somehow kicking in and then immediatly cancelled by moving the mouse, but I haven't been able to confirm this. This doesn't seem to happen if I'm typing or using the keyboard.

rasse, yours could be the HWcursor problem. I experience the flicker (somewhat similar to what you described) even when I do absulotely nothing (just stare at DFP )...

I found a rough workaround, though: If I go in lesser resolution mode (CTRL-ALT-+) and then return in 1024x768, the flicker disappears. But if I let the laptop go in power-save mode (i.e. the monitor turns off), after returning operative the screen starts flicker again (until the next resolution change).

I sent a bug report to nVidia, hope they'll find the bug.

I found something simular:

When using SMP Kernl the flicker starts from the beginning.
When using non SMP Kernel there is no flicker at the start until my openGL screensaver starts. After the screensaver there is the flicker problem. I'll now check if a non openGL screensaver will fix it.

I'm using 1400x1050 and a Gforce FX5600 Go.

Kai
