After switching to a non openGL screensaver my flicker problem is gone. I use a non SMP kernel and normaly no openGl aplications. The screensaver was the only one.
But if I start the SMP kernel with my Mandrake 10.0 the flicker problem ist back! Hope this will help nVidia to find that damn bug!

I have found out, that it works with the smp-kernel too.
I use now kernel 2.6.5-7.95-smp (Suse 9.1 after YOU).
The driver which is currently running is the 5336.
My Grafikadapter is a 'GeForce FX Go5700' with 65536 kBytes VideoRAM.
The Notebook is a P20-932 HT 3GHz (Toshiba).

The important part of my 'XF86Config':

Section "Device"
...
Option "NvAGP" "2"
Option "HWCursor" "false"
...
EndSection

That did not help for me, sorry. I think most people already read about that option and still have the flicker problem.
I must confirm what alessio facen wrote, after a change of the graphics resolution the flicker is gone. My previous statement about openGl was wrong! The non openGL screensaver still makes X flicker after I turn back to normal screen. But what I can say for sure: the flicker nerver appears before my screensaver starts.

Greetings,
Kai

I just downloaded and installed the new driver version 6111 at my Mandrake Linux 10.0. I had some problems to install the driver, but could get it to work after all. It works fine now, haven't seen the flicker problem yet.
Please check if it will help for your flicker problems too!
My device settings are the following now:

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPMS"
Option "NvAGP" "1"
Option "TwinView" "0"
# Option "SWCursor" "1"
# Option "HWCursor" "0"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"
EndSection

Thumbs down Re: nvidia driver makes x flicker at random times

Just wanted to let everybody know, the flicker bug is still alive in driver 6111. :-(
Only workarround is to change the resolution for a while.

Kai

Same problem here:

Toshiba P10-554 (P4 HT, GeForce FX5600 go), Gentoo Linux, Kernel 2.6.7

I think i tried all possibilities written in this thread (smp, nosmp, XF86Config....), but it still flickers.

@NVidia: Come on!!!!

What fixed it for me was changing the refresh rate from 85Hz down to 75Hz.
My screen res. is 1600x1200.
I've been running like this for about a week now without a single flicker.

Hope this helps someone.

Alex.

Hi alexdeac, how exactly did you change you refresh rate?

Can you post you XF86Config/xorg.conf - or maybe just the part you changed?

What is your system? (laptop?)

-Thanks
Anders

Anders,

My computer is a desktop with a GeForce FX 5600.
Unfortunately I haven't had a change to put this change in my XF86Config file.
For now I use KDE's ability change the refresh rate on startup.
I'll try to come up with a config file for this and post it here.

Alex.

I have the same problem as anybody else here in this thread :)
My laptop is an Toshiba P20-932.
So far I tested all settings that were suggested here, but the flicker will not go away.

--Andy

somebody here asked about the OT problem with this laptop if rebooting/halting the system: yes, I have to disconnect the power-supply from the laptop to boot again :)
