I have a new work around for the nvidia flicker problem.

I was playing with my HP Pavilion which has a GeForce FX Go5700 with 128 Meg and running the gentoo 2.6.8 kernel and xorg. I was flipping back and forth between the nvidia and nv drivers because the flicker was also killing off an X video extensions (the system worked until the flicker, and then I would get the blue screen problem that several people are reporting in other threads), but I still had apps that needed the glx installed. At one point while I was switching back and forth, I realized that I had a stable system with the nvidia default settings.

Here are the steps how I get nvidia to load properly without a flicker, and with video extensions working properly.

1)If X is up, shut it down. (This procedure requires you to restart X a couple of time. If you are brining it up automatically, you might want to stop that until a true fix is available)
2)Do an rmmod nvidia if the module is already running. (The ability to remove kernel modules is an option that has to be set when the kernel is built. I do not know if there is an equivalent in the 2.4 kernels.)
3)Edit your xorg.conf so that it uses the nv driver.
4)Start X.
5)Exit X.
6)modprobe nvidia.
7)Edit xorg.conf to use the nvidia driver. (The default settings work fine. It actually works better with the default hardware mouse in gl based programs.)
8)Start X.

After this procedure is complete, the video card works perfectly until the system is powered down. Whatever nv does to initialize the card, stabilizes it for nvidia. Hopefully this information might also help provide a proper fix.

This is an interesting trick... but the resolution change it's far quicker.
I'd like Nvidia to build a driver working flawlessly without these workarounds, since I - and many other people here - suffer the flicker on a laptop, and I shut down & reboot more frequently than jebas.

(Do I need to mention I got no response at all from nvidia-bugs?)

I admit it is a pain in the gluts to go through this procedure, but changing the screen resolution did not work for me. It would merely delay the first flicker a few extra minutes. (This was similar results from an earlier suggestion about changing the hardware cursor to software.) After the first flicker, mythtv, mplayer, vlc, and anything else that used xv showed up with a blue screen. I'm just offering the alternative to those in a similar situation.

i have the same problem with 6111.
The screen flickers, even goes dead for a bit when i choose a gl screensaver.
Everything seems to go back to normal though a few seconds after i close the control centre.
Anywayz,
i have an msi geforce fx 5600
running fc3 test 3 (with my custom 2.6.9smp kernel) though the same flickering appears on stable releases too.
I running dual-head, and the flickering appears to affect the screen NOT on the digital connector...
GL games run nicely though (doom3).

Tried what several people said in the forum, but nothing works.

I read in another windows forum (they have the same problem),
that this is caused by the drivers trying to detect if a TV is connected(nvcpl.dll),
he disapled this dll and everything ran smoothly. Just by 2 cents.

I too have the same problem on winxp with the latest drivers, but i downgraded to 53.xx (don remember).

Hoping that it will be fixed next release...

You can disable TV-out with this:
Quote:
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV"
However it doesn't seem to help

Same problem in Dell Precision M60

Nvidia Quadro Fx Go1000 BUS AGP

[root@amturing root]# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.8.1 (root@amturing) (gcc version 3.3.3 20040412 (Red Hat Linux 3.3.3-7)) #1 Sat Oct 16 01:40:54 CDT 2004

[root@amturing root]# nvidia-installer -i

Welcome to the NVIDIA Software Installer for Unix/Linux

The currently installed driver is: 'NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86' (version: 1.0-6111).

Im not sure what the OpenGL Settings->Allow Flipping attribute do, but I disable this...
Use :
[root@amturing root]# nvidia-settings

Angry Re: nvidia driver makes x flicker at random times

Dear Santa,

The one thing I want this Christmas is to finally have 3D capability for my Dell Latitude D800.
That is, to use the NVidia driver instead of the generic driver that came with the 2.6.7 linux kernel version I have. Not that the generic driver is bad... its what I've been forced to use due to the incompetence of NVidia with their driver bug... and lack of customer feedback regarding it.

Maybe you can GET THE MESSAGE THROUGH to NVidia staff because they don't seem to want to listen to their customers... or care about their customers, unless they are using MicroShaft Windoze.

If I had the chance to put all their programmers in front of a strobe light and make them stare into it while it intermittently flashes at them... for several hours... maybe... just maybe they may start to understand how ANNOYING their driver bug can be.

As I suggested to their dead-end email (linux-bugs@nvidia.com), if you can't find a solution to the problem... release the source code to the more competent OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY who
will fix the problem this century!

yours sincerely,
Mick Iwishiwentati.
