Default nvidia driver 3d acceleration doesn't work

Ok, Here's my computer's info

VIA Motherboard
AMD Athalon xp 2100
Nvidia GeForce2
Gentoo Linux 1.4
Xfree86 4.3.0
KDE 3.2
Kernel 2.6.7
Nvidia Kernel Drivers 1.0-5336

I have the splash screen and everything, but when I run glxgears I only get about 360 fps

Here's some chuncks from my XF86Config

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce2"
#Driver "nv"
Driver "nvidia"
#VideoRam 32768
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Section "Module"

# This loads the DBE extension module.

Load "dbe" # Double buffer extension

# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
EndSubSection

# This loads the Type1 and FreeType font modules
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
# Load "freetype"
# Load "xtt"

# This loads the GLX module
Load "glx"
# This loads the DRI module
# Load "dri"

Load "freetype"
EndSection

KDE 3.2.3
XFree86 4.3.0
Elsa Erazor II (RIVA TNT)
Intel Pentium II 400 MHz (slow, but not THAT slow)

--------- (part of) XF36config ---------

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "freetype"
Load "v4l"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
EndSection

Section "Device"
BoardName "RIVA TNT"

Default Re: nvidia driver 3d acceleration doesn't work

what does /usr/X11R6/bin/glxinfo print?
If it says "direct rendering: no" you dont have 3d acceleration enabled..
how about "ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears"? note that it should use /usr/lib/ OGL libraries (/usr/lib/libGL.so). If its using OpenGL libraries elsewhere say /usr/local/lib/libGL.so, delete them (and backup them) to force glxgears to use /usr/lib ogl libraries

The installing guide for SuSE 8.2 writes "There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already enabled, when the nvidia driver is running. Ignore the misleading error message, that 3D support can't be enabled." But it's definetly to slow to be hardware accelerated...

The reason it's running slow on your system is because it's using Software GL and not HW GL. The Mesa GLX drivers are messing up your config. Try and reinstall the Nvidia Drivers again.

So basically the glxinfo output should look like this....

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

Your glxinfo output is ok. It's giving the correct info. But there may still be one of the drivers (Library Files) that maybe pointing to the wrong place. I'll checkout my system when I get home. And post the out come.

if you do a search in this forum. you will see this problem reported many times started since more than a year ago.
I had a gf2 mx before same thing ~350fps. not matter what I do. I tried more than one Gf2 mx, same thing. I though it was distribution problem, but you got Gentoo, I got Fedora, same problem. I upgraded to FX 5700 still same thing slower than what a FX can do.

I've installed the drivers now a few times, i don't think another try will fix this problem...

But that seems to be the problem: how to switch from Mesa to HW GL?
