Default 1920x1200 single DVI

Hi,
I just got a new Sony monitor SDM-p232w. This can do 1920x1200. I have GeForce FX 5600. But I can;t get this resolution running. Can the card do 1920x1200?

If not, what is the cheapest Nvidia card that is capable of this resolution. Thanks for your help.

The card can I'd imagine (I'm running a GeForce FX Go5200 and it can do it, only figures that yours can). Do you have the right refresh rates and stuff for your monitor?

My config file is attached. With this file I only get 1600x1200 and the logs show the for 1920x1200 vrefresh is out of range. I know my refreh rage is set right (from specs) so I uncommented the "IgnoreEDID" line. Then the resolution is set to 1920x1200@60, but when I am playing a move I see noise ( red dots around the white areas, green speckle at the boundary of two colors and the like).

I am using a single link DVI-D cable. But then I think that should not be a problem as 1920x1200 is single link resolution. So I wanted to make sure the cards DVI transmitter can do 1920x1200@60.

Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated.

I did a quick search around the interweb and found this site

http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines

stick in the values and it'll create a modeline thinger for you, and modelines are more useful to X than refresh rates. It might help *shrug*

By the way, I havn't used this myself, so I don't know if it'll work or cook your monitor. I have heard good things about it though.

Just did a quick search and it would appear only certain cables can do 1920x1200 properly. Are you sure your cable can do it? The noise you are seeing could be the cable crying for help because it cant cope. Or I may be talking complete crap.

Had tried the modiline but the noise is still there. In fact I used the EDID information from the logs to create the modeline, so I am sure its exactly what my monitor wants.

Will have to get a new cable to try the other theory. It just might be the case.

Some monitors don't provide the wrong EDID info, which is how my bro frid his monitor. He hated that monitor though, so it wasn't much of a loss :P If I can think of anything else, I'll post.

OOooooo, as much as it pains me to say, try it in windoz at 1920x1600 and see if you get the noise (if you have a windoz installation).

While I am waiting to get hold a Windoze box here is what I found:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/130/

Seems to indicate the DVI is upto 1600x1200 for Geforce; means the card can do it but the DVI interface cannot. Are you using DVI?

Well, I know this not to be tru. I am at this point using a Radeon 9200 with the SOny 23 inch ( same as the parent post). Thru DVI right now it is working at 1920x1200. However I am using this on a SuSE 9.1 with Xfree 4.3.x open source drivers. The problem I am having is to make it work ( either a Radeon 9200, Or Geforce 4200) with proprietary drivers. Proprietary drivers don't want to go above 1600x1200 resolution. I did not try the newest nVidia driver however( it is too painful to swap cards and try it). I am trying to decide if I should buy a 6800Ultra , or a x800. Driver support for 1920x1200 on DVI is what makes the difference.

Do not forget that Apple uses the same strategy on 1920x1200 on Single DVI for their displays.

I'm using a laptop :P Much easier solution. Oh yes, I actually found a laptop that can do 1920x1200 instead of this stupid 1024x768
