Default nvidia drivers crash kdeinit

Who has an idea to solve this problem: I have installed the recent nvidia drivers for my 5200FX card. Installation OK, X starts OK, but I can't login as normal user with a segfault in kdeinit. However, as root I can log into the graphical mode. Seems to have to do with file permissions? Any help appreciated

Mark

Which distribution and KDE version?

plus, it might be useful to have the relevant section of the relevant log file, but I can't remember offhand where KDE logs its failures. Anyone?

I'm running RedHat 9 with 2.4.20-30.9smp (dual Athlon MP), XFree 86 v4.3.0, KDE 3.1.-13. The nvidia driver is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run.

There are no errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. If I log in as root, KDE performs nicely with acceleration. If I log in as user, KDE does not start. The errors are logged in ¬/.xsession-errors. Unfortunately, that file is now overwritten as I uninstalled the drivers, but right at the beginning, /usr/bin/kdeinit starts kdesplash and ksmserver, which both segfault. KDEinit segfaults after that. This is about the gist of it.

Thanks for any help.
