Unhappy Re: 1.0.6106 and lockups

What are you running when it happens (copy & paste the below)?
Distro name: SuSE 9.1 Pro
Kernel version: 2.6.4-52 SMP
X version: XFree86 Version 4.3.99.902 (4.4.0 RC 2)
Video chip: GeForce 5600
Video RAM: 128MB
Card maker/model: (Bought from Best Buy can't remeber brand sorry)
Motherboard brand and model: Aopen DX34+
CPU: Dual 1GHz P3's
Program(s) that cause lockups most often: Any Video App TVtime, motv, xawtv Etc.
What you were doing when it happened: Starting to watch TV, get maybe 30 seconds to a minute then freeze on the 6106 drivers

I am hoping that this will bring out a common factor and then Nvidia can fix the problem.....

NOTES:
One this is a Dual Monitor system, one of the VGA output one on the DVI output using a DVI to VGA converter. I switched back to 5336 and can watch TV, but I still get a hang infrequently usually when something 3D like xscreensaver is running (And then only after 5-10 days of up time.). One other note My second screen (on the DVI) Flickers intermittently (One flicker per say 15 minutes) It isn't a full blown Vert sync reset just a flicker.

Guys... I may have a solution for your hanging problem.

I've got a Dual Athlon MP 2400, A7M266D, 1GB, GF5900/256 Machine running FC2.
The machine was rock solid with 44.96 and 46.20 but very unstable with the 53.xxx and the 6x.xxx drives.
This under hand compiled 2.6.5/2.6.6 and 2.6.7 kernels.
If I'd start X and zap it (Kill the X by Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) the machine would hard lock.

Yesterday I tried the 2.6.8RC2 kernel (patched against the 2.6.7 kernel) using the same configuration and... Kazam! everything seems to work.

While I've yet to put it through heavy testing... this might be a solution.

Hope it helps,
Gilboa

Did you try moving to 2.6.8?

Well... it (almost) worked for me.
Only one X crash since I tried it. (And even from that I recovered by sshing and restarting X)

Cheers,

Tried to use 2.6.8-rc2 last night but couldnt get X to start. It was late so I'm sure I just did something stupid. I'll try again tonight when I get home.

Don't forget to reinstall the drives after building the kernel.

Distro name: SuSE 9.1 (64)
Kernel version: (defualt, subsequent patched, and 2.6.7) Using: 2.6.5-7.95
X version: XFree86-4.3.99.902-43.25
Video chip: GeForceFX 5700 Ultra
Video RAM: 128 DDR2
Card maker/model: EVGA
Motherboard brand and model: Tyan Tiger K8W
CPU: Duel 246 Opterons
Program(s) that cause lockups most often: (Occasionally: Starting X, Sax2) Allways: OpenGL
What you were doing when it happened: Gaming (different games) ut2004, Battlefield 1942, etc

X config tweaks, kernel changes, etc.....nothing I've tried so far helps....On lockup, X server spikes to 99% cpu utilization, can't kill it, can't shutdown box..only hardboot.

I have been stable now for a about 9 days. I think perhaps one of the tweaks i used caused some instalbility... of course i have not been home and i may be seconds away from a crash, but at least i did not come back to find a hung machine this time.

previoulsy i had all these options enabled.

#Option "NoFlip" "0"
#Option "PageFlip" "1"
#Option "RenderAccel" "1"
Option "DigitalVibrance" "0"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV,DFP"
#Option "dpms"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"
#BusID "PCI:1:5:0"

This has made no difference for me. I still have the same problem even with the newest drivers. I'm going to RMA this card!
