5700 non-ultra 256mg OR 5900xt 128mg

gday,

I'm wanting to purchase a new graphics card and I can see two viable options for my wallet. Either a Leadtek A360 5700 non ultra 256mg or the albatross 5900xt 128mg.

All I can seem to find are benchtests with a fx 5700 128mg versus the 5900xt 128mg. I'm wondering if the 5900xt would be a better card even though it has 128mg less of ram than the 5700. Specially for the extra AU$60s.

Also, if anybody here uses linux and these cards there opinions would be greatly appreciated as well.

Definitely the 5900XT the 4x2 architecture ( against 4x1 ) and the 256 bit memory bus would more than make up for not having another 128MB of RAM.

Agreed! FX5900XT 128DDR is a much faster, much mroe powerful video card than the FX5700 256DDR.

Something to understand about 256DDR video cards is they are only useful for fast cards paired with fast CPU's at game resolutions of 1600x1280 with high detail textures. The FX5700 simply isn't powerful enough to really take advantage of 256DDR. The reason they sell it is really a marketing gimick. Sad, but true.

i have a great example of what you need to hear. i had a 5700 non ultra, and then i got a 5900 se.. man o man.. what that a HUGE difference!! the 5900 is the way to go

5700 = half the pipelines, half the shaders ALU and half the bus width of a 5900. Forget about the 4x1 thing, with two pipelines unable to loopback the card works like a 2x2 most of the time...

NV36 = NV35-MX
