I think many games supported 32 bit color because it was so easy to use like SM 3.0 is easier to use than SM 2.0.

V5 totally OWNED the GF2 in Glide games and FSAA, and the GF2 was faster in a majority of D3D games (especially if they had hardware T&L support...which very few did). So that was a bit of a toss-up depending on your preferences. However, it took a LONG time for 32-bit color to really be useful, in a majority of games it really wasn't worth the 50% performance hit for the slight visual upgrade (same was true of AA, though I thought a lot more games in 2000 benefited more from AA than 32-bit color).

But damn, I didn't realise how much faster the Voodoo 3 was back then compared to the TNT2. So that's one big difference between the current generation and the V3/TNT2 comparision. Though I'm suprised at that review you linked to...even on a V3 there were games that ran at over 100FPS at 1024x768? And the card only cost $160 at launch?!? Jeez, now I feel ripped off...sure makes saying "you can play almost any game at over 60 FPS at full settings on this $500 card" seem sad...I'd like to see how a card released nowadays for under $200 performs in most games!

I loved my Voodoo3 3000 PCI card.... *sniff*
I'll never forget the day I plugged her in and disabled my onboard ATi "AGP" video and played Unreal and UT...
Glide rocked!!

Think about it this way, Games didn't take full advantage/push a video card enough back then.

Actually they did, it's just that there wasn't a LOT of features that differentiated the cards. At that time you had 16-bit vs 32-bit support and Glide vs no glide support. DirectX was no where near the juggernaut it is now and many AAA-title games came coded in OpenGL.

Most video card reviews at that time centered around a mixture of framerates and 16-bit vs 32-bit quality. Not a whole lot different from today's review methodology however I would say that it is significantly harder to identify the differences in graphics cards today than five years ago. 16-bit vs 32-bit was night and day difference in image quality. AA or no AA is close, but nowhere near the graphical jump as doubling the bits for color precision. (Sidenote: I'd love if we got 10-bit color in the next gen video cards this fall.)

Anyways, the pixel pushing power of the cards from that generation certainly can't hold a candle to today's cards, however I would probably still say that the leaps that spanned graphics generations have shrunk to small steps in the last few years. That said the GeForce 6800 series is the biggest thing to hit the graphics scene since the r300 debut two years ago.

I did a side by side comparison between the voodoo 5 and a Creative Geforce 2 mx (DDR) in 2001 and found that the mx was faster in opengl and direct3d games, a lot faster in quake 3.

In addition the image quality was noticeably sharper and the colours more vibrant.

This is in 16bit colour, no FSAA. 32 bit killed the frame rate on the mx though and the voodoo 5 came out ahead.

By that point 3dfx had been absorbed with no new drivers and nvidia had made big improvements through driver tweaks especaially in things like quake 3 and 3dmark.

I think that we're in a much better position now than in 99.

Then you had a lot of glide, opengl and direct 3d games with more competing chipsets out there. Now its nearly all direct3d and you have ati and nvidia to choose from. If you pay for a £100-£150 card you can play anything thats out now well. Maybe not high levels of fsaa but you didnt have that back then

At least if you have ati or nvidia now the current & future games'll probably work if not now soon through a driver release. Feel sorry for all those poor guys who bought s3, matrox, power vr & kyro or even 3dfx, when most games started to require hardware t & l or looked rubbish because they lacked texture compression support.

I still remembered when TnL was the newfangled uberfeature of the GeForce256. But I also remember the NV1. I wonder if nVIDIA will ever go back to trying to stick video + audio on a single card. Then again these days cards are starting to use two slots, I couldn't imagine a single card that used one slot for video plugs, another for audio and a third (or fourth!) for a super fan.

Only on paper specs. I had both cards, and my GF3 smoked the 8500 in every way, shape and form. Half the games I tried on the 8500 didn't work properly, and driver "upgrades" fixed the half that broke only to break the other half. By the time halfway decent drivers were released for the 8500, the GF4 Ti was out and the 9700 was around the corner. You have to consider more than just the hardware when talking about graphics cards.

By the time ATi8500 had decent drivers that allowed it to surpass the GF3 both cards were already history. A perfect example of how NOT to launch a graphic card.

I had both the radeon 64 and geforce 2 gts and I'd rate the radeon over the gf2.

Image quality was better in both 2d and 3d, and 32 bit performance was better in several areas. Opengl performance wasnt as good but that affects all the cards.

Have you tried to actualy play a game in 32bit at 8x6 or higher on a tnt?
