I don't play games, I bench! 3DMark2001 scores are atrocious. The stutters are particularly bad in the Nature sequence.

I take it that you are trying to take the mick. I suggest you quit while you can before drastic action is taken.

Actually, now that you mention it, I did not get stuttering with the 71.89's.

One detail maybe interesting, in game Soldier WWII there is an option called "shadow card choice", if i put it on 1 or 2 shadows map, i have freeze, if i put shadows off, freeze goes off.

With 66.xx i was not having any freeze, and if i use nforce2 with my 6800 no freeze with any driver & game.

With 81.8x i have less freezes in somes games like earth2160, maybe 1 or 2 by hour, it's playable, was not the case with 77.77 and highter.

But 66.xx untill 77.76 was having a mapping bug , someting maybe linked to shadows O.o by sample in X2 i was seeing dark glitchs in asteroides when they was moving.

Underclocking have not change anything on my card.

My temps are ok, but i see the voltage in rivatuner moving often.

It is so good that I don't have this problem anymore.

No, since I have all these rigs, I have several ATI and Nvidia cards, and the problems with the Nvidia cards are ridiculous. At this point, the only card the 6800 Ultra works with is maybe the XP AMD rig or the NF4 rigs. No go with the NF3 rigs when overclocked, and looks like the same with the P4 rigs.

At least I can just put my ATI cards in the boards that don't work, but guys who invested in an Nvidia card will be screwed.

I've posted here previously about the problems with my 6800 Ultra when overclocked on an NF3 rig - a common problem. Now to find the same issue with an ole RDRAM P4 board - I think that is certainly valid news.

Can someone post a FAQ what known issues are with this card and what possible fixes there might be? I don't feel like skimming through 92 pages of threads.

Yes I know there have been several threads but no one has posted a concrete solution. This worked for me and ALOT of other people in the OCUK forum.

First of all I thought heat, then I thought power related. However after lots of testing and forum posts it turns out it was Fast Writes being enabled causing it. I cant take credit but it definitly fixed the problem.

Interestingly disabling it in bios did not disable it in windows and I had to disable it using RivaTuner.

Also instersetingly for people not experiancing this, disabling Fast Writes appears to allow higher overclocks for people using all types of 6800s.

This appears to be a problem specifically on the nforce3 150/250/Pro/non-pro chipset ironically (as far as we know).

The problem has been posted by people in various places but its never been categorically fixed to my knowledge anyway (I did lots of googling believe me!). So I felt it best to post as a FYI for people.

Updated on 3/20/2005 by MikeC:

I put together a new system back in January, which consists of an AMD Athlon 64 4000+, MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Motherboard (nForce 3 Ultra), and two 512MB sticks of Corsair DDR400 dual-channel memory.

Most of my gaming of late has been in single-player mode, but this weekend I had the urge to fire up my favorite multi-player game - Enemy Territory. Unfortunately, I have spent most of that time investigating an annoying system "freeze" that occurs while playing on PunkBuster enabled servers. The system even "freezes" for a split second when PunkBuster is enabled during ET's player profile creation process.

I didn't experience this problem during a preview of the GeForce 6800 Ultra on a similar system last April. I have tested the GeForce 6800 Ultra and Radeon X800 XT PE in the new system and the problem occurs with both graphics cards. There are a number of items left to troubleshoot, but so far the only way I have been able to avoid the problem is to play on servers that do not require Punkbuster.

The main reason I am mentioning this is because of the growing number of reports of random lockups and freezes with GeForce 6 Series graphics cards. If you are experiencing similar problems during on-line gameplay, be sure to check out "Punkbuster, ATI and Nvidia: Freezing in your online FPS favorites?" over at Neoseeker. Then head over and contribute in this massive thread at HardwareForum.

System Specs:
  • AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Processor
  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Motherboard (nForce 3 Ultra)
  • Corsair TWINX1024-3200LLPRO - (2) 512MB DIMMs - 1GB Total
  • Antec 550W TruePower Power Supply
  • Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra
  • ATI Radeon X800 XT PE
  • Creative Sound Blaster Driver v1. 84. 55
  • NVIDIA nForce Unified Driver v5.10 (Ethernet v4.42, GART v4.36, SMBus v4.04, NVIDIA IDE v4.46)
  • NVIDIA ForceWare Graphics Driver v71.84
  • ATI CATALYST Graphics Driver v5.3
  • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 & DirectX 9.0c

This happen exactly to me when using and old Geforce 3 TI 500. It was an issue with the updated drivers. There was never actually a fix for this card other than not upgrading the drivers and just using the drivers that would with punkbuster. Honestly if I had to place a bet on the problem it would be this for my current rig which is having freeze problems just like my RTCW did. I will try tonight on a non punkbuster serve to see if that's the problem. Anyways hope some of you check out my thread to help me find out if this the case with my problem PC.

I hate to say it again but the only absolute fix that will work all the time no matter what version of nVidia drivers or D3D game you play requires that you spend some money. Any VIA chipset board like the ASUS A8V Deluxe which I switched to about 2 months ago works perfect in all games and everything else, and OC'd as good as my MSI Neo 2 Platinum which is sitting back in it's box. The problem also goes away when you use an ATI video card, but that is a more expensive solution. I know some people don't have the extra money to spend, but how much is your time and the aggravation that goes along with it worth, when your constantly trying to find a fix for this problem. I know that I spent 2 1/2 months fooling around with EVERY possible fix and none of them worked completely, a few helped a little but I still had the problem in every D3D game (some more than others) so I finally said to hell with it and bought a VIA chipset board and now can sit down and just play the games without any aggravation.

Actually I fixed the problem. I mean came right on time. Installed the latest release nVIDIA ForceWare Driver 81.85 which came out yesterday. Man that's great timing for me.

Finally fixed mine after 3 whole days of owning my BFG 6800 OC...

The problem with mine was the SATA controller, the Silicon S3112 to be precise. Apparently either it doesn't like having Windows on the SATA drive or it doesn't like having the page file on the SATA drive. Since I don't want to go through reinstalling Windows on a SATA drive ever again (seriously, who'd have thunk that such a simple thing would require a floppy disk drive), I'm going to assume it's the latter. ie, having the page file on the SATA drive.

I just happened to have bought my SATA HDD at the same time as the video card, and it didn't occur to me until just recently.

PS. This is on an nForce 2 Ultra mobo (A7N8X-e Deluxe Wifi Edition)
