Lightbulb Re: GeForce 6800 and random freezes

hmm, I'll add my 2 bits in this thread, hopefully useful to someone.

I built an entire new system on Sunday.

Specs:

Antec PlusView 1000AMG
Antec TruPower 430
AMD Athlon64 3200+
Thermalright SLK948U with 92mm Vantec Fan
ASUS K8N-E Deluxe with Bios Rev 1001
eVGA GeForce 6800GT completely stock
2x512mb PC3200 Corsair Value Ram CAS 2.5
Western Digital Raptor 36gb
Plextor Burner
Case Fans: 2 in back...thats all so far

Anyway, after getting this sytem built and doing a good wiring job I ran a few tests. Here are the results:

3dmark03: 10,773
Looped Prime95 torture test blend mode for 20 hours: 0 errors, 0 warnings Looped 3dmark03 nature game for 10 hours: no errors, still running perfect when I ended it
Ran RTHDRIBL for 30 min: no problems

Temps:

Max CPU temp when idle: 41c
Max Vid Card temp when idle: 56c
Max CPU temp under load (prime95): 46c
Max Vid Card temp under load (rthdribl): 79c
Motherboard Temp: ~36c

good luck to all trying to get thier systems stable

I was having the freeze problems until I made my clock speeds equal (both 2D and 3D). After that, everything ran smoothly...until I uninstalled my SB Audigy 2 drivers. After reinstalling them and then updating to the latest drivers, I started to get the game freezes (especially in MVP Baseball 2004) and artifacting. I then uninstalled my Nvidia driver (61.77), used Drive Cleaner, reinstalled 61.77 and everything is all smooth again (with both 2D and 3D clocks equal). I don't know how or why but installing SB Audigy 2zs drivers after my Nvidia driver seemed to be making my system unstable. For those of you with the game freeze problem, consider how your sound card drivers may affect your performance and also, equalize those clock speeds. This seemed to be good for many of us. Good luck!

In my case, if it were just system instability, i'd dive right in and mess with the audigy 2zs drivers, but i doubt sound card drivers are causing my gfx core to reach Critical Core Temp after 1 game demo in 3dmark03.

I've had a few 6800 cards on test months ago and they have all suffered from the cooling fan being insufficent for the job at hand.

Attaching a better hs/f cured it and the core runs at 75C in Doom3 and FarCry, watercooling is better, it runs at 38C.

So it's best to send your duff card back and get a replacement. Many of the vendors now know there is a problem with the cooler.

I was surprised to find people complaining about this even though people (testers) like me have seen this problem in many manufacturers version of the reference product...

Like a lot of you I have been using an SB Audigy Platinum Pro Ex and the specific problem this has is IRQs, I found that with ACPI, quite often it would interfere with the 6800 graphics card...

Manually assigning the IRQ or putting the Audigy in a different slot cured the problem. BTW: there is no point in trying to run Doom3 unless you have a 512Mb 6800Ultra Extreme card (not out until Feb 05), I'm testing a dual 3dLabs Wildcat800 PCI-E card, wow, it's where NVidia will be in 18 months time...

I used to OC but now someone pays me to play with kit that is already faster than anything else. There is no way I would spend 4,000 on a graphics card...despite how much I'm stoked into gaming
