My 6800 Ultra card is stable and running beautifully with the new unofficial Aopen BIOS they sent me.

I see that they have now changed the default clock speeds in this bios version to 400/1100, down from 425/1100.

Previously I was getting long freezes in games and 3D Mark 03 would be unstable.

Well my comp just did the famous freeze at 4x, guess I'll just have to wait for the driver update.

A lot of the people here have had freezes and doing bios updates/fast writes/etc only helped a select few.

For me and a few others, dumping the crap thermal pads between the core/memory and the heatsinks made a world of difference.

This may not be the end-all solution for the 6800 series but it sure helped me.

I dumped the thermal pads and used AS5 on the ram and the gpu and the damn thing still freezes. This is not a heat or power problem its the drivers. Sometimes after a long freeze my computer will reboot itself and Windows will make an error report and it always points to the Nvidia driver.

damn it damn it!!!!!

I have the same problem that everyone else has here. I guess it's not so frustrating that others are having the same problem.

I have the famous 5-10 seconds freeze too. But it only happens in far cry and NEVER doom 3. It may happen with othe games too but I haven't play much other games beside doom3 and far cry.

I'm getting a new power supply to see if it'll solve my problem. But I think it won't because another poster had a pc power and cooling 510 deluxe and his gt still freezes. This may be a Nvidia video driver/direct 3d game issue.

Please nvidia, read this freaking thread and come up with a solution already.

Oh by the way, I did everything suggested here: everything from putting AS5, running the same 2d/3d OC, and even upgrading my bios to the PNY revision 2 bios.

I have PNY 6800gt OC'ed at 423/1180
AMD athlon 64+ 1mb cache @ 2.3 Ghz
epox 8k3dj motherboard
1gb crucial single sided 3200 ram

THE WEIRDEST THING IS THAT THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT HAPPEN IN DOOM3!!!!! i CAN PLAY DOOM3 FOR HOURS AND WON'T FREEZE BUT I'LL PLAY FAR CRY FOR A MINUTE AND IT'LL FREEZE AT A PARTICULAR LEVEL IN THE MAP. THAT'S ALSO ANOTHER WEIRD THING. THIS IS NOT THE MAP LOADING FREEZE OR THE SAVE GAME FREEZE BY THE WAY.

This problem is so weird I can play games some days for hours with no freezes and other days it will freeze every 10 minutes. For my comp Doom III and 3D Mark 03 will freeze the most and all my older games have no problems, no freezes at all. I have flashed my pny 6800 gt to the revision 2 bios with no luck, it appears that the bios flash works better with the ultras than it does with the GT's. I read another thread where sometimes coolbits2 can cause problems, but I've been unable to verify that.

Default Possible solution?

I think I may have found the real culprit to all of the freezing problem. After exhaustively ruling out all of the usual suspect:

-agp fast write
-agp sideband addressing
-all possible forceware drivers
-2d/3d mismatch
-psu

I think the real culprit is direct x 9.0C. I became suspicious when doom 3 would run perfectly smooth and fast and yet far cry was giving me the 5-10 seconds freeze. What's the difference between doom 3 and far cry? opengl and direct 3d (or directx). So I clean install windows with the original windows cd in which there is no direct x 9.0c. I upgraded to 9.0b instead and i played far cry for 30 minutes with no freezing. Now there is a catch, it could be that it's a service pack problem. Before the solution, I was running service pack 2 windows xp with dx 9.0c. Now i'm running service pack 0 with directx 9.0b.

Do all of you guys run dx 9.0c?
Does anyone run service pack 2 without 9.0c?
Does anyone run service pack 1 with 9.0c?

These are important questions as they will help rule out the cause.

I run service pack 2 with DX9c and dont have any problems... I had the freezing as well, but the latest BIOS from EVGA fixed it.

I had the freezing before Dx9c and afterwards.

It's kind of confirmed...I don't know

I just installed servicepack 2 which includes 9.0c and the freezing happens again.

But some of you guys are saying you have the freezing before 9.0c and servicepack 2?

I don't know what to think anymore....

Time to start writting Motherboard Manufacturers !

They need to do something.

Similar to problems with 8XAGP when it first came out.

I have an evga 6800GT, and when I had this card in my P4 2.6c system, I never had a lockup/pause and that was with the core/mem set to 400/1100 using the 61.77 drivers. Recently I changed over to an Athlon 64 platform with an nforce3 250gb chipset on the mobo. Then I started getting the 5 sec freeze every now and then in certain games. I disabled fastwrites which definitely reduced the occurrences of this, but occasionally it would still freeze. So I changed my core/mem clock to 390/1050 and I have not had a single lockup. I also did the bios flash to up my 3D voltage from 1.3 to 1.4. Right now I am at 400/1050 and no lockups in farcry, 3dmark2003, or UT2004 after a few days. I think it does have something to do with oc'ing the video card. I also think it's more prevalent on A64/nforce mobo's from what I have seen on forums.
