Default Re: GeForce 6800 and random freezes

I never experienced any sort of stuttering on my BFG 6800GT OC that came with a fairly old BIOS version of v5.40.02.15.01. But then, I think that's because I flashed my card the day I bought it with the Ultra BIOS with modified settings for 1.4 V for all three modes.

Just to experiment, I flashed my card to a GT BIOS with default voltages a few days ago and applied my usual OC of 425/1200 and played some games. I noticed immediately that Far Cry began to stutter and freeze once in a while even with the v1.30 patch applied.

The same kind of occasional stutter occurred in Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow.

Greatly annoyed, I flashed back to my favorite XFX Ultra BIOS with version of 5.40.02.32.00 with 1.4 V for all three modes.

Now, the card is back to normal and absolutely no stutters even with a higher OC.

So, I recommend those with the stuttering issue to flash your card with a modified BIOS that can feed more voltages to your GPU. Now, I know this isn't going to work everyone due to the inherent risk of this procedure involving possible overheating and definitely the voiding of your warranty.

But, there is always this option should you choose to try it. Just make sure you have good cooling. FYI, I'm using a DangerDen waterblock on my GT.

I don't get hardly any stuttering on my system. The only thing that I have a problem with is this:

For example, I just reformatted my PC (again) and re-installed all of my games. I was playing Doom 3 for the first time in forever and it played very nicely (fresh install of XP helps alot ). Later on that night, I ran Doom 3 and loaded up a saved game. It didn't take long to load the level but once it did, it froze and acted very choppy for about a minute or so. It might just be my slow HDD though . . .

Optimummind,

When you flashed to Ultra, did you change the timings to GT or left the Ultra ram timings?

well its not those.... for me anyway
1) i have a 465W enermax with strong ratings on all voltages
2) i tried all the options for aperture
3) flashed multiple bioses
4) audigy2 on my system has a different IRQ anyway
5) im not forcing any refresh rates

Disabling Fastwrites solved the pause/stutter issue on my rig.

Tears of joy!

After 7 months of this "issue", i finally found the solution for NF3/6800 GT owners(at least for me, please reply if it doesnt work for you).

I tried nearly everything: every driver since 61.76; fastwrites on/off (off seems to help, but kills performance); cpu/ mem/ apg/ chipset voltages; PCI latency tweak. I knew it wasnt temps either: 34C cpu/ 26C sys/ 48C gpu/ 30C pcb. Nothing worked except dropping the core clock to around 380-400, could even leave the DDR3 at 1200.

1. Download Driver Cleaner Pro and follow the steps in the readme file to the letter, removing both chipset and display drivers and cab cleaning.

2. Install the 6.53 NF4 Standalone drivers (YES this is for NF3 owners).
Do not install NAM and Do not reboot yet.

3. Install just GART 4.40 from the 6.37 beta drivers.
Do not reboot yet.

4. Install the ForceWare 76.44 drivers.
Now reboot.

Thats it You can find all the drivers and DCP at guru3d.com

I have this problem as well. But whenever I try to overclock my Ultra's core to 450 (which it can handle on any other motherboard) I get the massive freezing and pausing.

Can you overclock that core any higher to see if starts to occur? If this truly does fix it, then amen!!!

the gainward utility goes to 420/1200, thats as far as i will go. before 3dMark05 would freeze for anything over 400/1200, guaranteed. now its stable through 415/1200. doesnt freeze even at 420/1200, but mild artifacts are present.

I am anxious to try this fix but I am hesitant to install the NF4 standalone drivers for my NF3 motherboard and what is NAM anyways? I already tried the beta GART drivers with no success but then again I didn't try it in combination with the NF4 standalone drivers and in the order you mentioned. Has anyone else had success with this combo?
