Default Re: GeForce 6800 power supply questions

Hey kahloq,

Can you please give a breakdown of all the leads of you 520W PowerSteam(how many leads with number of molex connectors on each)? I'm getting this PSU in the next few days, but I'd like to know this information in advance.

Much appreciated.

See above post

Mobo connector is BTX, but comes with ATX adapter. AUX power connector is also present.

I'm a dumbass...

Saw you mention OCZ PSU and quickly replied without even reading your post...

Thanks.

kahloq, its tempting but i'm thinking it may not be just a low voltage problem. I've read other posts from people having almost 100watts (better amps too) more than mine and still get freezes. Last night far cry ran fine and then just froze near the beginning of a new level. I'm thinking drivers or heat (although a psu is still not out of the question)

Well you can check different drivers at no cost The a low cost solution is possibly look at your case cooling and add a fan here or there...possibly a vantec dual fan pci card($16 at newegg). Although an even cheaper attempt would be to use a 3-4 pin adapter on a molex line to run the vid card on that adapter thereby making it run 100% all the time. This would give you a probable decrease in temps of about 5c. 3-4 pin adapter costs between 1.99 and 3.99.

I should note tho that since you mentioned you used asus probe and its reading the +12 rather low, that is definetly something to look at. It should not be that low(11.673). It should be right on 12 or slightly above. 11.9 would be ok, but not 11.6. The OCZ would give you a yellow light telling you its too low on that rail. A quick turn of the screw adjustment to get it into green and you'd be good to go. I also have asus probe installed. My OCZ reads:
+12 12.289 to 12.342...never higher or lower unless I fiddle with the pot
+5 5.16 never changes
+3.3 3.36 to 3.76.....never higher or lower unless I fiddle with the pot
ALL GREEN Indicators on the back led lights for the respective pots

vcore 1.6 to 1.616

If different drivers no work and you've done a clean reinstall of XP and then updates and drivers and finally reinstalling farcry....and still doesnt fix. Then try the fan ideas. If those dont help then a power issue is the MOST probable thing to fidget with.
Also have you updated mobo bios or drivers? Have you checked to see if those ppl that are having similiar problems are using the same mobo as you? I have an asus p4c800 deluxe-e and have no problems.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe your cpu is getting to hot. You mentioned cpu fan in the low 2000's. I dunno whats average, but asus probe shows mine at over 3000.

Also, just because they have 100 more watts, doesnt mean their psu's carry the rails decent or may be too low or too high as well. Your +12 like I said is low at 11.673. Even a 650 watt PSU thats not all that great isnt going to keep the rails reliable. This is whats so good about OCZ. Besides being rock solid on the rails, you can adjust them without opening the psu or removing it from the case and do it WHILE ITS RUNNING!!!!! to see the results

I'm using the a ZALMAN CNPS7000A-Cu Pure Copper CPU Cooler (applied with AS5) without the fanmate, instead of the stock cooler that came with the EE. CPU temps run 35-40 range and have never hit 50 (No O'Cing)

As for case fans, i have two intake fans on the front, and two exit fans, one on the rear right next to the zalman fan and one 'blowhole'. All are 80mm. The two exhaust fans are temperature controlled (with manual override)

I'm about to hook all the rest of my stuff up (External hdd, scanner [self powered] etc) into the computer. All of these plug into a surge protected strip along with the computer and monitor. This 'shouldnt' degrade the voltage going to my 400watt PSU but i'll be monitoring the asus probe for safety.

Updated voltage readings taken from asus probe 2 while using the Antec trublue

CPU Temp - 41
MB Temp - 30
(coolbits gcore temp @ 58)
CPU Fan - 2657
Power Fan - 2480
12V - 11.916-11.795
5V - 4.972 (stable)
3.3V - 3.28 - 3.264 - 3.296
Vcore - 1.568 - 1.584

For quick comparison, the Zalman read as follows
CPU Temp - 38*
MB Temp - 27*
CPU fan - 2177
Power fan (rear exit fan) 2445
+12V - 11.673
+5V - 5.053
+3.3V - 3.344
Vcore - 1.568

Classify this as "close but no cigar"? Man, this 3.4ghz EE and 6800U drink more juice than a hummer drinks gasoline!!

Time for an OCZ PSU??

Holeeee Crap! Okay you know how with the ultra, if you only connect 1 molex it gives you an error "Downclocked for safety"? Well i went to take a shower and came back and saw that message. Well i looked at the cathode light (which is split with the Ultra) and it was running fine, so i just clicked 'okay' and basically said 'nevermind' to it. Until the same window was behind it. I increased the height of my startbar and there were THIRTY "Downclocked" message windows!! THIRTY!!

Yes, time for an OCZ...

That makes Three powersupplies....

It depends on the amp rating on the +12 of your 480w PSU.

TheHelpful1. If you hook up an OCZ 520 and you still expereince problems, you should be able to send it back to newegg. Although, I'd highly recommend keeping the OCZ in any case as that Antec is still a little low on the +12 even though its reading 11.9. Another note, you should try using molex lines to the cid card that HAS NOTHING ELSE on it. Thats not a problem with OCZ's as there are 2 seperate dedicated vga molex lines.
