Default Re: Xorg, Nvidia -> black screen of death.

For what it's worth, below is the tail end of an strace of the Xorg process when it causes the black-screen-o-death. Hopefully this may provide some insight into what's going on. Unfortunately a quick perusal by me didn't uncover anything additional. Hopefully it will to someone more knowledgable.

I would have attached the entire file but the manage attachements thing keeps telling me the file is empty when it's not.

I had the same problem with 2.6.7 and xorg!

this works for me:
kernel = 2.6.5-gentoo-r1
driver = 5336
Xfree86 4.3.0.1

Out of curiosity, what motherboard and video card are you using. Maybe I'll try your suggested config under my 32bit install.....

Thank you for the kernel config offer, but our hardware is going to be drastically different. I've gone from having everything compiled in all the way down to bare minimum, no difference.

Thanks again!

Same problem here. AGP enabled=Black screen of death. AGP disabled=completely stable system. I'm running opterons and mobo has AMD northbridge. Anyway, tried everything I can think of....several kernels, this off, that option, solutions people have posted, bla bla bla. I actually wasted another 5 hours of my life trying to fix this thing with 2.6.8-rc3 tonight. It would be REALLY nice if someone could post a definitive answer such as "there is a bug in this driver and will be fixed in the next release". Or something along that line.... My aggravation levels are way beyond simple annoyance. I just wanna game!!! Guess I'll have to settle for my 10 various tetris clones....this should be fun...

So what hardware are you running on, and what video card? Maybe if enough people would speak up we can start to narrow the issue down.

Several co-workers are building the same box as I have. One has his up and running using the latest Suse version with a 5700 Ultra card. It's working perfectly fine - even under AGP (I had him send me everything in /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp to verify it).

I have tried multiple kernel versions, all the solutions posted that work for everyone else (disable USB2, etc), and everything else I can think of (reset the BIOS, disable this, enable that). No go.

Running strace on the X process didn't do any good (at least as far as I can tell). The only last suggestion a coworker said is to alter the xorg code and sprinkle out debug messages in it. I haven't tried that yet. I'm hoping to get a response from nvidia (but not holding out much hope).

Anyhow, I'm running on a Tyan K8W board (single CPU right now) with a GeForce FX 5700.

Not here. I'm already using gentoo-dev-2.6.7-r11, Xorg and the latest nvidia drivers. What it did improve for me was I can now enable acpi so the machine can completely power off on shutdown. Other than that, no diff. Only runs in pci mode. Black screen on either kernel agp OR nvidia agp.

What hardware are you on, and are you in 64bit mode if it's an opteron? I'm on a tyan k8w, single cpu opteron, running gentoo in 64bit mode.

After using gentoo a few times I found that what kernel I compiled at stage1 wholly
wreaked havok upon my system when I upgraded the next kernel or nv packages. I guess thats the price you pay building custom?

Did you do a stage1 install with a different kernel?
You may have to reinstall from stage1 if so.
It fixed alot of my problems.
last install I just made general modifications, upgrades go alot smoother now.

hope you get yours sorted out, good luck

I have a Tyan Tiger K8W (S2875 rev 1.02) Chipset for the AGP tunnel is AMD-8151. I'm running SuSE 9.1. Initially, I had AGP turned on under the default kernel. BSOD would occur at random intervals. Sometimes when starting X, sometimes I could game for an hour or more and then bam, hard lock. Very bizarre...with suse patched kernels and every custom kernel I cannot even start X without a hardlock when AGP is enabled.

I also have a GeForce FX 5700 and using Duel 246 opterons.

....and no luck with 6111 driver. Same problem....Is there no hope?
