The 2.6 kernels had been in development for nearly 2 years and have been released last Christmas. Ever since there have been 7 official upgrades and the 8th is coming any time soon. When will you release drivers for the nforce chipsets? Until when will my pc be mute?

nvidia run's on my system,(fedora2, kernel 2.6.6-1.435.2.3) amd64 cpu, geforce 5700 256mg,512 ram. runs excellent if installed correctly. (just letting you know they do work well, keep trying) good luck

The 5900XT that could.

I've been running Gentoo for quite a while time now (10 months or so?), and I've never had a problem with my nforce2 ultra 400 based motherboard. *shrugs*. Sucks that it doesn't work for you :/

The point is that the nForce package is obsolete under Linux 2.6. forcedeth provides ethernet, the AGP backend has been merged and the i810 sound driver works with the audio chips on most nForce boards.
Okay, there are a few features missing, but I'd suggest you switch to the ALSA driver instead, which is fully featured AFAICT. http://www.alsa-project.org ALSA is part of Linux 2.6 now. I think it unlikely that NVIDIA would release another nForce package for Linux given the level of support now available in mainline. |

Nope, alsa doesn't contain soundstorm support. I hope one day Nvidia gives us soundstorm support!

If the nForce Drivers work for the 2.6 kernel then why don't they release updated rpm's for Mandrake 10? After all, Mandrake 10 has been out for many months now.

like someone above mentioned, alsa dosen't support soundstorm...
and the intel 8x0 drivers for alsa don't support hardware mixing! that alone is enough not to use the nForce's built in sound and buy an sblive! as for 2.6 kernels, nForce IDE and the reverse engineered ethernet drivers work well (forcedeth). but without hardware mixing for the audio.. forget using the audio part of the chipset, unless you like a program producing audio to block all other programs that want to produce audio. its sort of disconcerting that nVidia puts out such stellar gfx drivers, but dosen't put out nForce drivers of the same calibre... |

Well it is simply like this: Without soundstorm, the nforce2 onbaord sound is like every other ac'97, basically just a DAC and ADC. So you need a DSP to get features like hardware mixing. sblive is a DSP with its own DAC and ADC, so so can forget about onboard sound and can use the DSP as the driver uses it...
I think with nforce4 and soundstorm2, we probably get a linux driver for soundstorm1, as well, but I hate to wait another year or two. :/ |
