Exclamation I can't start more than one X !

Hi ,

I am using Fedora core 2 with kernel 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 .

I have installed Nvidia graphic drivers 1.0-6106 . I can start X from init 5 or under init 3 ,startx .Both works fine.

But when I simply typed command :

Code:
X :1
to start a second X as I usual did on my sis650 based laptop ,I got a blank screen , I can use
Code:
alt + f7
change back to my first X .

I have got error messages in /etc/X11/Xorg.1.log:
Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate external video decoder object
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.1.log" for additional information.
I used the command
Code:
X :1
to launch a second X on my SIS650 based laptop ,it worked well. Why I can't use this to start a second X on my TNT2 Model64 Pro? Any body knows why?

Thanks in advance.

This is my lspci:

To start more than 1 x session, you use startx -- :1

Hope that helps..

Unhappy Re: I can't start more than one X !

Hi,
I have the exact same card as you. Running two or more simultaneous X servers on my system has not been possible with any of nvidia's proprietary drivers after ver. 4620. Many people have already posted on the forums about this, but there has been no response from anybody regarding why this problem cropped up when it earlier used to work just fine. There is even lesser hope that it will be ever fixed in any future driver releases.
Incidentally, this issue affects only those with older cards, like the TNT2 and maybe a few others too, which probably explains the lack of any response... Do a search for "external video decoder object" on this forum to read messages by others facing the same problem.
The only solution I can suggest is to either use driver v.4620 or below, or use the open nv driver.

Thanks . I think I should go back to 4620 ,and thinking about buying a new card.

FWIW, the problem is known and will be addressed in a future driver release.

Hi,
I have the same card as you (Riva TNT2). The chipset is SiS635. With the option ' Option "UseInt10Module" "on" ' in the XF86Config file, it works fine, but only one card is possible. If I try 2 Nvidia cards, it doesn't work. If I use the second Nvidia card with BIOS 2.05.13a, it works fine. If I use both Nvidia cards with BIOS 2.05.20.02.00, it works only with the driver 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run' without options.

Thanks.
Sorry for my English.
