Default 1024x768 works 1280x1024 goes berzerk

so,

when i set my metamodes to "1024x768,1024x768" my two (different models) displays perform beautifully. when metamodes are set to "1280x1024,1280x1024" the displays both go scatter-brained whenever there is any change on the screen- mouse movement, windows, whatever, the screen shakes violently re-drawing the desktop all over the place.

i'll post my config if people want it, but i assure it's quite plain. i've got a dual port geforce 4.

has anyone had/seen this?

thanks for any input.

Default Re: 1024x768 works 1280x1024 goes berzerk

so,

after playing with metamodes for hours (with no changes), i tried simply backing my default display depth to 16 from 24, and viola, 1280x1024 modes on both screens works flawlessly.

1024x768 at 24 and 1280x1024 at 16 are fine, 1280x1024 at 24 is insane, everything looks just fine, but both screens jump around whenever there is the slightest movement of mouse window or anything else. my hunch was that specific modes are broken, but after trying a few combinations, there was no change whatsoever, different clocks didn't matter, as long as the depth is 24, the screens shake wildly.

I'm attaching my config and the output from a bad session to this post.
