your comments will be swiped under the rug of history after d3 gets a wide release.. for some people d2 was the last computer game they played and it will generate large income for the new batch of gamers coming back and a new batch just starting up.

ive seen the screens and can see the writing on the wall.. this game is going to kick ass.

We tried a few options to see how they impacted quality/performance. Without specular it runs quite faster with little impact on quality. Disabling bumps is quite a different story, though.

I'll eventually play it again for a little longer in the next weekend but the first impression (again, I'm talking about the engine and the engine only) is still a sense of disappointment.
I understand what you mean about the low resolution textures. High res textures have always given me a better sense of realism in a game (along with well done shadows and lighting).

But I think the game still looks amazing because of its bump mapping and normal mapping. Its a shame they couldnt make the textures larger and more interesting, but look at the memory requirments right now... i dont think theres a computer out there right now (well, available to the public ) that would be able to run Doom 3 if it had higher texture resolutions.

I think so... even disabling compression on ALL TEXTURES runs on current cards today! I am currently playing on ultra quality and it looks fantastic. high quality vs. ultra quality.. i cant even notice a difference. So I think that a little compression, mixed in with higher resolution textures would have been better. Don't get me wrong, the game looks fantastic. But there are a few low res textures.

I think it has to do with the system they were targeting. They were targeting 9800xt for the high end. Everyone knows the game wasnt supposed to take this long. Now we have super high end cards that came out right before release... my 6800ultra runs the game at 1600x1200 4x/8x at about an average of 50fps!!!!!!!! hmmm... Its not an easy task to go and redo all the textures at a higher resolution.

yup. Only problem i have is there is a slight pause when entering new areas, probably running out of texture memory. But its hardly noticable, and doesnt detract from the gameplay at all.

Men, what a disappointment. From the techical point of view, this engine was badly overhyped and overrated. Most of the textures have a comparatively low resolution and they're badly blurred. With bump mapping disabled the general look of the surfaces is even worse. The polycount of the meshes is also very low.
The only impressive part of this engine are the real time shadows; but this alone does not compensate for blocky meshes, flat and lowly detailed surfaces and blurry textures.

After having seen the Unrealengine and Cryengine, I am accustomed to an higher level of detail, both texture and mesh wise. I can tolerate blob shadows or static lighting but there is nothing like walking near a surface and see a badly blurred, flat polygon

These are just my two cents.

Geez... I should be able to play it the same then... I might die when I play it . I still wish the double barreled shotgun was in the game... that better be the first new weapon added in a mod (whenever the SDK comes out ) .

but you can see the smoke/fire haze effects in the earlier levels which looks pretty impressive .
the hell levels should pack a lot of these effects.

But couldn't id just release a patch with higher-res textures and stuff like that? Or is that not possible?

Yeah, they could, if they were so inclined. It'd be friggin' huge. Not that I would mind at all.
