Man, I have it on 1152x864 at medium, AA and AF disabled and that's the only way I can get reasonable framerates.

I really need to get a faster proc and one capable of using DDR400 at DDR400.

Even still, at those levels the game looks fantastic.

OK, I've played the game for about 4 hours straight now.

Any complaints about low-res textures are unfounded and ridiculous. The game uses dynamic lighting for everything, where Far Cry for example uses precalculated lightmaps thus allowing for the use of detail textures, etc. There are not very many areas in Doom 3 that use low resolution textures, and it doesn't look bad at all in the areas that do.

This is probably the best looking game I've ever seen, and it sure as hell looks better than Far Cry. Not that Far Cry looks BAD, but by comparison this game just looks more REAL. Far Cry can't hold a candle to the technology at work behind the Doom 3 engine, no matter what anyone says. I cannot believe people can find anything to complain about, but I guess there will always be wiseasses.

Talking Re: Disappointed...

It debend on your point of view what looks more real to real world , if you like high res textures everywhere but blob shadows , or you rather have lower res textures on moust objects with real time shadows.

To me realistic shadows make it more real , we already have dozens of games with high res textures crappy shadows... time for something new and Doom 3 takes the ball. Only game comes close to Doom is DeusEx IW, but it ran like crap and was no fun to play *runs and hides from deusex fans*

Heck if your vision is bad real world will always look same as Doom 3 , blurred textures scary shadows

*Disclaimer i don't have Doom3 yet only pics*

I too am a tad disapointed with the graphics. This is only with some of the screens I see, and the fact I am a perfectionist. Show me a screen and I can tell you something about it that annoys me

But-
I don't care for IQ that much in a game. As long as it's pretty good. And there is a huge difference between stills, and full action of running around shooting demons from hell. I believe that the graphics that are there, combined with the gameplay, will make it a heck of a game

Sorry but the low texture quality is very noticeable for me. Running a 6800ultra on ultra quality, I'm getting pretty solid fps of 60+. I thought this game would actually stress out the 6800ultra, but it doesn't. I just wonder what kind of performance hit I would take with higher res textures.

I picked it up tonight from EB, and have been playing for about 2 and a half hours. I spent too much time fiddling with the controls to get the graphics to a level that would give me good framerates. After that, I dug into it and so far, so good.

So great, actually. This is the first FPS that's sucked me into its universe in a while, and that's refreshing. I'll be playing this one through several times, I think, especially as my equipment gets better.

I'm playing at 1024x768 at medium detail. Barton 2500, 1 Gig Ram, soft-modded Radeon 9500.

Lighting is probably the most important aspect of any 3D game as far as realism goes. Doom 3's lighting system is well beyond anything else out there right now, and it takes advantage of that by making tradeoffs (i.e., slightly lower res textures) to achieve excellent performance across many platforms. There has not been a single moment in the game where I've even noticed a "low resolution" texture (in quotes because you can't really call any of them low-res) during gameplay.

It's not just the shadows, though those are awesome. It's the fact that every single light source in a level is dynamic. This makes the game even more amazing to me. Whatever, if you want to find something to bitch about I guess no one can stop you. I'm tired from having fun playing Doom 3 instead of whining and nit-picking.

The graphics are nice and the 6800GT seems to do well at 4xaa high detail and 1280x1024. I am playing on an LCD though so I noticed some tearing without Vsink on. I need to setup my old CRT so that I can enjoy the shadow detail because my LCD just doesn’t cut it for this game.

One thing I did notice was that with my GT overclocked to 418 on the core I was starting to get some artifacts in D3. I guess JC was right about new portions of our video cards being used for this game. I backed it down to 400 on the core and will work my way back up to see just how high I can go without artifacts.

Overall it gets thumbs up, but I think the flashlight thing is annoying. I understand what they were trying to achieve but I’d think that the UAC would have figured out how to put a flashlight on the end of a gun by now. So far I am totally fudging the switching back and forth between the flashlight and gun, so it causes me to suspend my disbelief since I end up getting pissed off about it.

Otherwise, so far it’s a good game. I’ll reserve my full judgment until I get totally comfortable with the controls.

Update: I've gotten used to the weapons switching now, and the game is progressing much better. I also turned the brightness up a little in the game to help compensate for my LCD display. The more I play, the more I like this game.

I am pegged at 60fps most of the time but it drops to 35-40 when fighting under some circumstances. I am playing at 1240x 1024 on high detail with 4xAA enabled.
