Default problems with first boot

hi,

i've got a really confusing problem my linux system. each time i make a cold start of my pc (i.e. it was turned off before) fedora (and slackware) boot normally, but when it starts x (no matter whether it's xfce, gnome or kde) the whole screen looks disturbed.
the area above the mouse cursor looks like, well, somewhat striped, and the area below mouse cursor is even worse! i've tried to make a screenshot, but it looked normal ... after reboot, everything works fine.
glxgears shows very low framerates when starting under disturbed screen (~70 fps), when everything is normal it shows usual levels (~1000 fps). reproducible: always when pc has been powered off for a while.

i'm using an nvidia geforce4 mx 420 card with latest nvidia drivers, i don't think it's a hardware problem since there is no similar issue in windows xp, please help me with this one since it drives my crazy sometimes, especially since linux needs for a single boot nearly double time as windows!
