Question Newbie - How to know if my nvidia work?

Hello.

At work, i recently received a 1year old PC. It has an nvidia. But I feel that gfx are quite slow. I wonder if it is running properly. For example, some very simple 3D screensavers (like the one with 3 gears) are 'jumpy' instead of having a soft-movement. Also, for example window movements are 'dirty' and re-rendered when the window is released.

I'm a newbie at the sum of Linux+Nvidia.

kernel:
[DEBIAN 10:40:58 xavi@xavilin ~]$ uname -a
Linux xavilin 2.6.7 #1 SMP Fri Jul 16 10:22:16 CEST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

Drivers:
A team-mate did compile an Nvidia driver. I don't know where he downloaded from, nor how to find out which version it is nor anything else.

Desktop:
X at 1600x1200 + Gnome + metacity

Usage:
When X is strting, a big Nvidia logo is rendered for a couple of seconds, so it seems that the driver is being 'loaded'.

QUESTIONS: How do I find out if my X are using the driver properly? I feel it is loaded, but I don't know if it is properly used. How do I find out the model of nvidia I have inserted? Is it normal that this happens? I feel I must provide more data for you to help me, but I don't know which data do you need and how to find it.

Thanks in advance.
Xavi.

glxinfo is a program which dumps the info, you want to see direct rendering. More info is in /proc/driver/nvidia (eg cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status)

Hi whig, hi all.

These are the results. Still I cannot discover if the low frame rate is due to the limitations of the card or to a missconfiguration.

Any help to find if my card is properly configured or I'm at the limit is welcome. I don't know how to interpret those results.

Thanks in advance.

Your configuration is about as good as it could be, not quite the most recent driver but then the Vanta is an old card. Pushing it to 1600x1200 is ambitious You probably want to get a new card. What is your cpu/ram btw?

Unhappy Re: Newbie - How to know if my nvidia work?

Hi whig.

I cannot buy a new one. This PC is at the company I work for, and they are the responsible of buying hardawre. There is plenty of pleople more needed thatn me in the company.

Btw, the info about CPU and MEM follows. If my card is old fashioned, I'll have to be patient, perhaps next century i get a newer card from my compnay :-(

If this info helps, I'd appreciate any comment. Anyway, I start feeling that I'm going to have to conform with the current frame rate :-(

Thanks for all.

A P4 2.4 is not slow, and you have the ram too. It comes down to the Vanta being old and therefore slow. I suspect that if your P4 has integrated video it will be faster than the Vanta. The Vanta might even be a PCI card. I find it hard to believe a system like yours has such old video, and I shudder to think how little video RAM it has - maybe to little to handle 1600x1200 well.
