Arrow Doom 3 console commands

i'm very proficiant with the q3 engine, so i'm doing a pretty good job finding out cool commands for d3, they are a bit different though. put these commands in the console (how to use the console). here's my list so far:

to remove the intro, edit your shortcut to the game and add +disconnect; like this:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Doom3\Doom3.exe" +disconnect
r_shownormals 1
this will show normals... it's sometimes used in q3 engine games to find wallhackers

r_showtris [1-3]
this is used to view the game in a wireframe, nice for figuring out what is geometry and what isn't

com_showfps 1
this is to display your frames per second (i'm sure all of you will want this turned on)

com_showmemoryusage 1
this shows verbose information about memory usage. this can be helpful in finding out if you're running slow due to your video card or if it's your memory

r_showintensity 1
this shows the intensity of objects, lighting kindof... try it out to see what i mean.

r_skiprender 1
this is for turning off the drawing of 3d objects... this can be abused for people benchmarking, but lets just hope that people realize the benchmarks of d3 aren't accurate and shouldn't be taken as so (mostly diagnostics). this is used for many diagnostics purposes, among them seeing how much of a bottleneck your GPU is

r_shadows 0
turns off shadows

r_skipbump 1
turns off bumpmapping (if you play with this, it's amazing how much bumpmapping is used in the game)

r_skipguishaders 1
turns off 2d drawing of the HUD (not all 2d drawing though, only what's considered the "gui")

com_videoram
this is how much video ram the game detects you have. should be set to the proper value automagically, but doesn't always work from what i hear.

image_usecache
this enables the use of image_cachemegs

image_cacheMegs
changes the amount of memory used for precaching compressed textures.

image_anistrophy
anistrophic filtering; it can be manually set. in high quality it's set to 8x for your viewing pleasure.

----
Notes on using these commands
if you would like to bind one of these to a key, simply type bind key command. further, you can use the command toggle to set something on/off. for example, i can type:
Quote:
bind f10 toggle com_showfps
this would toggle the drawn frames per second on and off.

also, you can use seta and set in the configurations. most people do not realize that one or the other exists, and normally don't know the difference. seta will actually change your configuration file for you to include this variable, that way it is saved and re-used the next time you start the game. set is temporary, and anything used with "set" should not be saved through the next time the game is started.

you can edit your permanent configuration by editing base\DoomConfig.cfg with any text editor. i suggest backing this up before editing it, as i don't think doom3 has profile support.

that's all for now, i will add later if i find any more neat commands.

Find "seta image_cacheMegs" in your config, increasing its value will boost performance, it defaults to 20 for me, after setting it to 96, it runs much smoother(without periodically reading harddisk). I only have 512MB RAM, if having more RAM, you can set the value even higher.

Please make this thread a sticky. As we add more to this conversation, alot of people wil find this usefull for thier configs. As for myself I havent really fooled with many cvar settings yet. I'm sure as time passes and I play more I will as I have done with Q3 over the years. Eventually we will all have custom configs.

what is your image_useCache set to? it should be right above the image_cacheMegs in the config file. thanks

It's set to 0 originally, I tried setting it to 1, but the game crashed afterwards.

no problem, i must warn you though that not all of these commands are accurate. i'll try to figure out why or what is going on... possibly there is a difference between the pirated version (presuming that they used the pirated version) and the actual release. also, they may have assumed some commands existed from the quake3 engine that no longer exist (such as cvarlist).

edit: they did indeed add some of these commands with the assumption that they would work in doom3 as they did in the quake3 engine.

Why bothering with the console commands ??

you can find them all in the Doomconfig.cfg file located in the base dir .

i just enabled player shadows ! .. dang i was playing all that time without it !

yea... matter of fact i don't even think it's half-inclusive; along with the fact that it does not include a description of the command.
