Exclamation Questions regarding game performance...

OK, before you tell me to go run benchmarks and stuff, I'm at work.

My system is as follows:

Asus a7n8x-deluxe
Athlon xp 3200
1024MB DDR PC-3200
GeForce 6800 Ultra
SB Audigy 2

Basically, I play all the popular games. UT 2k4, BFV, Call of Duty, whatnot.

My LCD Panel (samsung 172x) max resolution is 1280x1024. So that's the max for resolutions. Just recently I was playing UT2k4 at Max settings, 1280x1024 and I still experience low framerates on maps like Deck-17 and even DM-Rankin. And Rankin isn't all that good looking. Now, I've been told that my CPU is a possible bottleneck. I understand this but I'll lay it out really simple for you. I'm not willing to spend another $600+ on a CPU/Motherboard upgrade.

This may sound strange, but would increasing the image quality such as 8x AF (no AA, never use it) increase performance? Oh, by the way, I'm using the Beta 66.00 drivers.

There are a lot of factors you aren't being very clear on. Are you playing with bots? Did you turn VSync on? What do you consider to be "low framerates"? Some people get miffed seeing anything below 60, which is pretty normal for DM-Rankin at max settings. My average FPS in Rankin in a 12-bot match is around 50-60, and our systems are about the same.

OK, well I'll say it again anyway. UT2K4 is a very CPU-intensive game, and doesn't depend on the video card as heavily as you would think. Even if you did spend another $600, it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway. Max settings is very taxing on any system.

No, not at all, especially on a 6800-series card. You've got it backwards - increasing image quality lowers performance since it takes more effort from the card to produce a better quality image. Based on my own benchmarks, however, I've found that AF impacts the framerate MUCH more than AA (which at 4X makes about 1-2fps average difference at 1280x1024). And using beta drivers, you can't really complain about performance issues, can you? From what I've read the 66.00s are screwed all to hell and back.

There never has and never will be one "best set" for a specific video card. What set might work great for one will be absolute hell for someone else.

Stick to the latest official drivers (61.77) for now. If you have problems, you can try previous beta drivers, which can be downloaded from Guru3D.
