Default X Lock Up (6106)

Ok, I have read countless posts here (as far back as 2002) on the gentoo forums and elsewhere across the net with absolutely no success whatsoever. This is my cry for help.

I just purchased a new laptop with an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go GFX card AMD Athalon XP 3000+ 512MB DDR and an nForce3 mainboard chipset (nForce AGP controller) I have compiled and installed the most recent three releases of the nvidia drivers and am currently using the most recent driver (6106) and without fail whenever I am running X (xorg or XFree86) my system will hardlock withen a random but short amount of time. No matter what I am doing, regardless of the window manager or system load. it will simply lock up when it wants to. (Usually withen five minutes).

I have tried many things, from disabling AGPGART and using nvAGP to changing my stack size in the 2.6.7 kernel that I run (currently set to 8k but 4 was no better) I have played with numerous options in my kernel and with the module loading (enable/disable AGPFW/SBA in all combinations) I have enabled and disable DMA I toyed with countlless options of hdparm and I even tried running kernel 2.6.8rc3. I can honestly say I have no more ideas.

Please if you have any ideas, help me!

Does it work in Windows? Another distro? The standard "nv" driver? The other thing is Athlons and ram.... Athlons seem to require good ram when mixed with Linux and nVidia drivers. Check how good your ram is with memtest86. Good luck.

It does work with windows, not that windows works ^_^

the nv driver is fine, albeit slow and according to memtest I am fine as far as my RAM goes (it's all brand new on this laptop) Havn't tried another distro, and don't think I will try. One I love gentoo so I will find a way to make it work Besides, anything like this I doubt will be dependant on my distro, especially when my system is in such a bare state right now.

I have a mx 400 GeForce4 card and got the same problems as you.
Seems like tuning the XF86config-4 helps a lot.
For me disabling the int10 module seemed to do the trick. I tried upgrading to xorg 6.7, but got lockups again and ended up going back to xfree86 4.3.0.1 again.

I've attached my XFree86 config. Seems to be stable for me now....

I think I may have solved it actually!! I disabled the IO-APIC in my kernel and Kaboom!! it worked like a charm I had an OpenGL screen saver up and running for a whole hour (before I terminated X manually) and it was glorious,

Now I cant seem to get X to start as any user other than root. If i start with a normal user, i get a black screen and nothing else. Root works fine though. Any thoughts?
