Default Is doom 3 and id the only thing keeping ogl alive?

it seems like all the games coming out now are made for d3d, with some ogl support added as an afterthought (like i noticed in ut2003). are there any new ogl games out there now, or is it just doom3? if so, since the biggest game to come out at least this century is an ogl game, would it revive it to the point where it could overtake the popularity of d3d gaming (again)?

Well, it's important to remember that the engine will be licensed for frequent use. Quake 3 was OpenGL and they're still using it. Knights of the Old Republic is OpenGL as well. Direct 3D just gets more attention now because of Half Life 2.

You might argue that opengl is a shade faster if you know how to code for the API well, like carmack can. However for developement purposes direct3d is much easier to code for and manage, with virtually equal performance. OpenGL won't die even if game developers keep shunning it, it's got a huge market share in the workstation software market (SGI backs it there), and most 3d packages use it as the preferred viewport renderer. The demo scene is also very keen on OpenGL still too, so there's no shortage of coders out there learning the API.

2 reasons opengl will never die: linux and mac

2 reasons directx may eventially die: linux and mac

Open GL is much harder to code for, and harder to write specific extensions to get more features from OpenGL because the ARB doesnt update OpenGL very frequently at all. So people like Carmack have to write extensions to get equal functionality as D3D. M$ on the otherhard updates DX frequently and comes with a much easier set of tools.

Well Call of Duty is OpenGl and is relatively new , also expansion for it will be new soon other then that probably 90% of market is Direct3D .
