Up until two weeks ago I had 98SE on my game only AMD/ECS K7S5A machine. My Dell 4550 has since arrived sporting XP Home Edition. Some newer games are playing better under XP. I believe newer games are being developed with XP. 9x os is an afterthought now.

**** off, Windows Xp.I'll never betray my Win98SE, cos it's offering HIGHEST FPS, and fps is live

What can offer XP that cannot 98 ??? And 3Dmark2001 score in 98 is 4900, in Xp 4400.**** off OS that gives me such perfomance slowdown.

And if hands are growing up from the right place ;-), you will never get a stability problem.98SE is the best, I've tested all Windows versions, including Win95,Win95OSR1,OSR2,Win98,Win98SE,WinMe [SUXXXXXX],Win2000 pro-server-advanced server,WinXp home and pro...

Even Wine emulator is faster than XP )))

I think he's saying that 98 is faster than XP, which I used to believe but not any more. XP (and 2000 for that matter) has been much faster and stable than any other M$ operating system I've ever used. The only reason to use 98, IMO, is if you have a really old system or you need absolute game compatibility.

My one word Windows roundup:

XP - Excellent
2000 - Good
ME - Gay
98/98SE - Mediocre
95 - Bad

Default Faster.... ?

3Dmark rules.

win95 - Not working at all, doesn't supports agp&usb without patches- suxx
win98 - around 4800 3dmarks
win98Se - 4900 3DMARKS + Excellent compatibility
win2000 - around 4700 3dmarks + more stable than 98, not bad system, but...
winXp - 4400 3dmarks.It just sucks :0

saturnotaku, and for what do you need XP ? Just for staying "up to date" ?

I'll tend to make it :

2000 - Excellent
XP - Good

But that's my personal opinion, only because XP is unecessarily bloated.

Also, I'm too keeping Win98 because of old, but still perfectly functional hardware I though it would be stupid to throw away (a MaxiSCAN A4 scanner on a proprietary ISA interface), and some Win2k incompatible software (and right, a bunch of old DOS games I still consider my favorites). Although I don't use it very often.

For stability (even when tweaked to hell, 98 still ain't stable), superior OpenGL support, new interface (which I happen to love) and future support of applications and games.

Even though I think 3dmark is a pile of cr@p, on my old Athlon 1.2 GHz machine I used to get ~3100 with my GF2 Ultra in 98SE. That number jumped to 4400 in Windows 2000 with no changes other than the operating system. After that and seeing 2000 whallop 98 in OpenGL, I knew I would never be going back.

With XP, I can run all my older 95/98 games, including NFS: High Stakes, which will not even install under 2000.

You said "fps is live [sic]" and that's what 2000/XP has delivered and then some.
