Exclamation twinview example or help?

Hey I'm trying to setup twinview on my Dell d800 laptop and a LCD monitor. I have read and reread the nvidia README but i still cant get twinview to work and i know the nvidia drivers are working. Can somebody provide a working example of their X config file with twinview so i can reference it or give me advice on my xorg.conf file? Thank you.

I'm actually having the same basic problem. I looked at your xorg.conf file and I noticed this line:

Option "TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf>"

Look like you inadvertently added a ">" to that line. (Unless of course it actually means something that I am unaware of.) Please let me borrow your eyes and check out mine. I'll start a new thread.

Actually it seems kind of stupid to start a new thread since I'm looking for an example also. Here's my xorg.conf if anyone would be so kind to take a peek at it.

Yea the '>' isnt supposed to be in there but that was a copy of my xorg.conf and the one i tried to use didnt have it in there. I didn't see anything wrong with yours but hey i cant get mine working so thats not saying much. I wish somebody would post theirs or nvidia would provide one so we can see a working version.

Wish granted :-)

This config file works on my Dell Inspiron 8200 in Twinview with two displays working as one large display. The info the D800 display is included and hopefully correct as I'm waiting for my new D800 to arrive somewhere around the 10th of this month :-) Let me know if it's correct!

Thanks for your response anduine. I was able to get twinview working with both screens at the same resolution (1024x768). However i was unable to get it to work with different res's (1280x800 and 1280x1024). Theses are the errors from the Xorg.0.log file:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find mode "1280x800" for display device 0 in
(WW) NVIDIA(0): MetaMode "1280x800+0+0@1280x1024,1280x1024+1280+0"
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find mode "1280x1024" for display device 1 in
(WW) NVIDIA(0): MetaMode "1280x800+0+0@1280x1024,1280x1024+1280+0"
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to determine virtual screen size because no modes are
(EE) NVIDIA(0): present
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failure to construct a valid mode list: no modes remaining.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

So it count figure out what resolution to use. Also how would I explicitly state the virtual screen size in the xorg.conf file? The metamode line I was trying to use is:

Option "MetaModes" "1280x800 +0+0 @1280x1024, 1280x1024 +1280+0"

which has an offset and panning domain stated since the resolutions are different.

I'll do the best I can to be brief:
You are trying to map your second monitor to the left of the first monitor, and then telling metamodes to map first monitors settings onto the first monitor, so:
quick fix:
set
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"

but this will put second monitor to the right, but everything else works fine,

or

Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,1280x800@1280x1024; other modes here"

Either way, I'm pretty certain this will get you going in the direction you want.

Good Luck!

Ok i have my external LCD monitor working at 1280x1024 but not my laptop LCD. The problem seems to be that nvidia isnt reading the MetaMode line right for the laptop screen. Here's a blurb from my Xorg.0.log...

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find mode "1280x800" for display device 1 in
(WW) NVIDIA(0): MetaMode "DFP-0:1280x800+1280+0,CRT-0:1280x1024+0+0"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 1024

And here is a blurb from my xorg.conf...

Option "TwinView"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0, CRT-0"
Option "MetaModes" "DFP-0: 1280x800 +1280+0, CRT-0: 1280x1024 +0+0"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "22.0 - 82.0"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50.0 - 76.0"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"

I know the laptop runs at 1280x800 because if i configure xorg.conf to not use twinview it will run. Why cant it find the mode for 1280x800 for my laptop? I have tried adding "@1280x1024" but that doesnt do anything. Any suggestions?

Smile Re: twinview example or help?

Look like mode "1280x800@60" is validated for the DFP-0. Since its a DFP the 60.2 Hz is probably just fine.

^What do you mean? It should be fine but nvidia cant find 1280x800 for device 0 when it should.

Also i tried the MetaMode

Option "MetaModes" "DFP-0: 1280x800, CRT-0: 1280x800"

but nvidia gives me the same error for both device 0 and 1...

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find mode "1280x800" for display device 0
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to find mode "1280x800" for display device 1

So can is nvidia not capable of reading 1280x800? Also for when i set both monitors to 1280x800 i appened 1280x800 to the external monitors resolutions.

To use 1280x800 you need to type the name of the modeline in the metamode. In your case the name is for example 1280x800@60 so you need to type that name. Note that typing that name causes problems as @ has a different meaning in a metamode, so rename the modeline to 1280x800_60.

Thanks Thunderbird for you advice. I finally got twinview to work with 1280x1024 and 1280x800. What i did was remove the @60 in the ModeLine for the 1280x800 monitor. So i changed it to this...

ModeLine "1280x800" 83.9 1280 1312 1624 1656 800 816 824 841

Nvidia was able to read it then. I have attatched my working xorg.conf file.
