Wait until more games come out with vast outdoor landscapes until you post your thoughts.
Uh, EXCUSE ME, but I believe I have said that comparisons of D3's engine to FC's engine are ridiculous because they are very different engines designed to do very different things with different API's. Please go back and re-read where I have stated this at least TWICE in this thread.

I also believe I can post comments about these two engines just as you can. Did I miss the memo that from Mike C stating that opinions were no longer allowed here?

Well you seem to be more worked up over the fact that outdoors in farcry is much better than doom 3. My comment is wait until games that can relate to farcry come out. Of course you are entitled to your own opinions, but when it comes down to comparing farcry to doom 3 don't go so far as to say that farcry is better, because doom 3 has not had a chance to prove itself yet. Not to mention Farcry is an action-based game, whilst doom 3 is horror. Of course Doom 3 won't be flashing around the outdoors wonderous colours from an imaginative painter's pallet. Do you come from HardOCP? Comparing apples to oranges seems to be a big thing...

People just dont understand that, Doom3 engine is probably quite capable of producing very lifelike outdoors (given fast hardware, but this isnt unreasonable), and if time is spent modelling Trees, and water, while implimenting an LOD system (if not already in Doom3). Its all down to the matter of the actual art assets. And with the per-pixel lighting/shadowing, it could very well surpass FarCry in outdoors.

That is precisely my point. Give the engine a chance before labelling it.

1. I did not say which one is better definitively, but based on what I HAVE seen so far, FC is better at rendering outdoor environments because it is DESIGNED FOR IT. I have yet to see D3 render a convincing outdoor environment. Have you?

2. Huh? They are both FPS shooters which means they are action games. Not sure where you are going with that analogy...

3. I have been here at nV News for a couple of years now. What difference does it make where I come from? I do not spend time at HardOCP.

If someone want to convince me that an apples to apples comparison is logical, I am all ears, but in THIS case, it is not.

Thanks but I choose to believe it when I actually SEE it...not what some speculate in a 3D hardware forum....I truly hope you can understand my position on that....

I agree with your apple/apple statement in this case. I mean what is the perfect "apple" for Doom 3? It can only be another copy of Doom 3. Comparing Far Cry and Doom 3 makes sense. Comparing Doom 3 and Warcraft III does not. In other words, about as close as you'll get to an ideal apples/apples comparison with games is by comparing games within the same genre. One step closer would be to compare games in the same genre that are based on the same engine but that limits you to very few games to compare.

D3 renders Mars ( outdoors ) perfectly based on shots from the Vikings in 1976 and the recent rovers. Very convincing. FarCry, however, looks nothing like a tropical island. It is too cartoonish.
