Exactly. We are comparing Doom 3 to another game that is (and this is important so I'm going to bold it) available to purchase/play right at this moment. We don't care about what might be down the pike in the next several months. Far Cry and Doom 3 are the only class AAA titles that have come out this year so there inevitably will be comparisons between the two. For the intents and purposes of outdoor rendering, we are of the opinion that Far Cry is better than Doom 3 - and we are only comparing Far Cry and Doom 3.

Id have to agree....while the outdoor mars scenery isnt bad...its definetly not very impessive. Just because its a mars location tho, doesnt mean that they couldnt have made it look ALOT more realistic. It just isnt really. Maybe Doom3 engine CAN make nice outdoors scenes... but the Doom 3 game itself doesnt require much in the way of that at all anyhow. So, we'll have to wait and see what MODDERS or game developers do in the future. Farcry, like has been stated has beautiful outdoor scenes and so-so indoors. The main focus for Farcry is the OUTdoors so of course it will look a hell of a lot better. However, that doesnt mean the cryteck engine cant do in door scenes as good as Doom3. I bet it could and I bet the Doom3 engine could do just as well outdoors. I dont think one is better then the other. In the games we've seen(Doom3 and Farcry)...each has a different play style and mood(atmosphere).

Game engines have ignored lighting and shadows for far too long. D3 really shines because of this. Lighting and shadows are a massive part of realism. CryEngine doesn't do much with either.

fps shooter is redundant... and not all fps games are action, such as the thief games. and besides, action game is a very general catagory

They might both be FPS, but different styles of FPS determine the settings, colour schemes, shadows, sounds, etc... I also find it funny, as kahloq has pointed out, that farcry cannot re-create indoor scenes like doom 3 can.

We could have had them all along! It took a badass dev like iD to finally get a good looking game like this out to exploit them.

Actually Deus Ex Invisible War and Theif 3 both have similar lighting\shadowing systems (though not as extreme) and look extremely good. DXIW has been out since last year, Thief 3 has been out for a few months i think.

Not to say Doom 3s graphics arent amazing, but because of Theif and Deus Ex, I had already seen most of the effects in D3...

but those heat and shock waves are absolutely amazing looking

When comparing apples to oranges, I always prefer apples.

Really, we have to wait for RTCW2 or Q4 screens to see the doom engine's outdoor renderpower. There's supposed to be vehicles and such in Q4 so I know there will be large outdoor levels.

One thing I want to see the DOOM engine do is WATER! That's one thing completely missing from doom3. The lava and chemical spill in doom 3 looked like crap IMHO.

I never said that Farcry engine cannot re create indoor scenes like Doom3 can. What I said was, we havent seen the crytek engine do it as well as the game doesnt use that much in door stuff so the devs didnt spend near as much time on it. The vast majority of the game is set outside so thats what the developers concentrated on. I DO think that Farcry's engine COULD do as well indoors as DOOM3 if the artists spent the time to do it. I also think that DOOM3 engine could do relatively well outdoors if the artists took the time to do it. Yes Id like to see the DOOM3 engine do water. Then and only then could we do an accurate comparison AS LONG as the ppl writing the code for the water using DOOM3 spent the time to try to do it as best they could. Same goes for Farcry's engine for indoors. Until that happens, theres no accurate comparison. End of story. Both are great games for what they are designed to visualize.

Is that anything to do with why they run so poorly?

I've seen 14 tropical islands in the 1st person-and every one of them resembled the tropical environment of FC.

If this isn't proof enough-just ask the jesus.
